[SOLVED] Windows 2022 failing cumulative updates with error (0x800f081f)

Hi,

Continuing from old thread with same topic and same server/problem. (Windows 2022 failing cumulative updates with error (0x800f081f))

We have a couple of Server 2022 VM:s failing to install cumulative updates, updates failing with error (0x800f081f). All VM:s originate from the same VM template, but only a few developed this problem.

We have tried the usual recommendations with sfc /scannow and Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, Dism throws an error as you can see in the logs.
For a few servers we did an in-place upgrade to Server 2022 which solved the issue, but some servers we would prefer not to do so, we have tried installing the updates through both windows update and manual msu/cab installation, but the result is the same.

Would greatly appreciate help with this.

Here's the first fix.

Step 1. Download

Step 2. Run the following DISM command and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.

DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

Upload your COMPONENTS hive.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.
