Hi Guys,
These updates have been failing continuously over the last few weeks. It is Azure server on the OS above. I have ran an sfc /scannow which highlighted some corrupt files. Therefore ran a Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - which completes successfully. But the update still fails to install. The settings page for Windows Update shows the status as installed - pending restart, however after the restart the VM show undoing some changes and the cycle starts again. I've also tried rebuilding the software distribution folder but to no avail. I've attached the requested files below for troubleshooting.

Any help would be massively appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi @BMC25,

Welcome to Sysnative Forums!

If you haven't already, please review the posting instructions here, and attach the requested log files. Without log files, our helpers will not be able to assist, and this will slow down fixing your machine.

If logs have been already been provided, our team of volunteers will analyse the provided log files to build a fix for your system. Please be aware that this may take several days from your initial post, due to the high volume of threads that we receive.

Do I need to upload/add more detail? Any help is massively appreciated. Thanks.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Do you have recent backups or snapshots of this installation?

Hi Maxstar, Yes I have snapshots going back to May 2024. I have tried rolling back to a previous snapshot but encounter the same issue unfortunately.

Okay, let's see what we can do. This because the installation is severly damaged.

Here's the first fix, but too large to attach here so I've uploaded it to WeTransfer: SFCFix.zip

Step 1. Download
67139f7e69a58-SFCFix-ico.PNG
SFCFix and save it to your desktop.

Warning: This fix was written specifically for this system. Do not run this fix on another system.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it to your desktop.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2. Download
61f7aba7309a1-ComponentsScanner_Icon.png
ComponentsScanner and save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click ComponentsScanner.exe and select "Run as administrator", click Yes on the UAC (User Account Control) prompt which appears.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Once complete, a report will be saved to your desktop called ComponentsScanner.txt.
  • Post the logfile ComponentsScanner.txt as attachment into your next reply.

Please run the System File Checker again and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
SFC /Scannow

Upload your COMPONENTS hive.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Here's the next fix.

Step 1.

  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it to your desktop.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

Step 2. Run the System File Checker again and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:

Same error, so please reboot the system and run the System File Checker again and post the result.

Please run the following command in an elevated prompt and copy paste the result in your next post.
Code:
certutil -hashfile C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-sechealthui.appxmain_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.19041.3758_none_277f36cf93590066\SecHealthUI.exe SHA256

It should be:
Rich (BB code):
SHA256 hash of C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-sechealthui.appxmain_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.19041.3758_none_277f36cf93590066\SecHealthUI.exe:

CertUtil: -hashfile command completed successfully.

Please do the same for another component location:
Code:
certutil -hashfile C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.SecHealthUI_cw5n1h2txyewy\SecHealthUI.exe SHA256
