I have sadly been stuck on win 10 insider preview 17661 for months , every attempt to update has failed and rolled back.

I have used all methods I have seen on many forums. All fail.

DISM fails on all methods.

SFC has found corruption and cannot repair and has also deleted any system restore points of which there were 3!

I tried downloading an ISO of a later version as version 17661 was unavailable given MSOFT policy of not supplying ISO!!! and tried and in place upgrade repair many times ... failed.

Now the useless OS has corrupted further and file explorer crashes and reopens so I cannot access any files or folders or any function that uses it!

I just tried SFC fix and it failed sent report back to SYSint. and produced this report "SFCFix version 3.0.0.0 by niemiro.
Start time: 2018-11-19 14:00:07.185
Microsoft Windows 10 Insider Slow, Build 17661 - amd64
Not using a script file.

SFCFix version 3.0.0.0 by niemiro has encountered an unhandled exception.
Currently storing 0 datablocks.
Finish time: 2018-11-19 14:02:14.618"

I cannot even download the 2018 Oct ISO as it has been withdrawn so even a fresh install is not possible!

I have worked with PCs and laptops for years and always managed to repair everyone but WIN 10 is rubbish. Cannot do an in place upgrade repair from boot only from drive .... impossible when file explorer doesn't work ......???
Cannot install win 8.1 as a repair as it isn't and upgrade .

It seems I have no option other than to lose 250 gb of programs passwords files and scrap the drive ?
Any suggestions out there please?

ps NEVER will build a new rig with windows again am switching to OSX !

Have tried Msoft support many times over this issue , used feedback hub used insider forums and nada ...

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

    Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

I will try but as explorer doesn't work at all now it may not work . I will run the SFC and then have to go into windows 8.1 to try to copy the file (if created) into win 8.1 drive and then post as I cannot copy paste or do anything since win 10 corrupted even more :( . It boots and all non windows programs run but all apps and any program that uses windows explorer just crashes including Opera browser when I try to download or even right click fro Opera ... I can run folder explorer fine but windows explorer is stuffed !

Yes it is a SDD 256 Gb have regularly run CHKDSK with no issues reported. Ran another utility after explorer broke and it said dome bad sectors at start of drive .. so have run CHKDSK /f/r/x . BUT when windows update failed on more than 30 occasions and also upgrade repair in place failed the drive was not flagged as having any issues .. onlt since explorer broke.

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:

  • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Execute gsmartcontrol.exe; Let the install complete and launch the programme.
  • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
  • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;

if I replace it then the os and all apps are lost surely ? In which case I am starting again? The SMART test suggests no failure but some read errors . is it not possible to repair the read error sectors? Then clone the drive?

It is very odd as I did a SMART test and CHKDSK quite recently without issue ..

The chkdsk /f/r/x is also stuck and at every reboot insists on running again. Once I let it run I can then boot into either the win 8.1 Samsung drive or the Win 10 drive and win 10 loads normally but explorer crashes every time it is opened . all programs run fine unless they call on explorer at some point when it crashes them. Folder explorer 7 and 8 run just fine.

Still suspect a windows issue as it was reading a USB drive when it suddenly said IO read error . the drive was no longer read and explorer stopped fucntioning

Unfortunately, yes. You can try, but I do not recommend that as the drive is already damaged and you would only have problems with this copy (if you would be able to do one without the drive dying on you). Backups should have been done earlier. Drives can be very unpredictable (as apparent from this example).

Thanks ..I didn't back up because the windows installation was useless and not updateable , I was trying to get the OS to update to 1809 when this happened , the plan was to backup once I had a workeable OS installed AS 17661 WAS AND IS FLAWED and many of us are/were stuck with being unable to update :( Thanks for your help I have ordered a new SSD and will try to clone the old to a partition and install win 10 1809 on another partition on the drive and see what I can do. Any advice will be gratefully received .
