Hi everyone,

I’m losing my mind over this. Since a Windows update that got interrupted (probably power cut during install), my PC has become unstable: Windows Update won’t work (error 0x800703f1), DISM fails with error 0x800f081f even when using correct source files, SFC can’t fully repair, and I get frequent BSODs (MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION).

On top of that, my Logitech G29 wheel stopped working and shows a warning icon in Device Manager.

Here are my specs:

  • ASUS System Product Name (generic model)
  • Windows 10 Pro (Build 19045)
  • Intel 11th Gen Core i5-11600K @ 3.90GHz (6 cores / 12 threads)
  • ASUS ROG STRIX Z590-F GAMING WIFI motherboard
  • 16 GB RAM
  • 3x WD 500GB HDD + 1x 1TB NVMe SSD
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER (16 GB)

I’ve tried SFC, DISM with different sources, in-place repair, Safe Mode, Windows Update troubleshoot — nothing works.

This isn’t the first time I’ve had similar issues and I really don’t want to do a clean install again. I might actually go to a mental clinic if this keeps up.

Thanks for reading.

Hi again,

Unfortunately, my Windows installation had become so corrupted that it kept getting more and more unstable. It eventually got to the point where it wouldn’t even boot properly and was logging me into a temporary user account.

Windows itself was running, but nothing else was — I couldn’t install anything or attempt repairs, and I was constantly getting errors.

So, I ended up having to reinstall Windows. :/

Hi,

Okay, and looking at all the issues I can only recommend to run memtest first, just to rule out some bad RAM sticks.

Please follow the instructions below to run Memtest. (It's recommended to run it for 8 passes (2 runs of 4 passes).
  1. Download Download MemTest86 Free to your desktop and extract this file.
  2. Right click imageUSB.exe and select the option "Run as Administrator".
  3. Select the USB-stick to place a checkmark.
  4. Warning! When you perform the following steps it will overwrite all your data on this USB-stick!
  5. Then click Write to copy the ISO file "memtest86-usb.iso" to the USB-stick.
  6. When you get the message: "You have chosen to write an image to the following USB-drive, click Yes.
  7. Then a final warning will appear, click Yes to create the USB-stick with the Memtest ISO file...
  8. Boot the system from this stick and run MemTest for the first 4 passes.
  9. If no errors have been found after the four passes of the 13 different tests that the free version does, then restart Memtest86 and do another four passes.
