Hi there

I'm new here. I'm trying to resolve an issue I'm having and realize I need some help. I have a Toshiba a605-p200 laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit, SP1. This is a retail upgrade version I purchased in 2009 directly from Microsoft to replace the original Vista that came with the computer.

I recently cloned the old hard drive and installed a new one. I replaced the hard drive because I bumped it and it started misbehaving. Now I get continual warnings from "Windows Activation Technologies" that "This computer is not running genuine Windows" (error code 0x8004fe21). My many attempts to resolve this issue through this dialogue box fail, and I receive "Windows could not be validated as genuine" error.

I've called MS Genuine advantage twice. Both support calls (level 1 I assume) gave me a new installation ID. In both cases they were able to assist me with what appeared to be a successful validation, but I continue to receive the above warnings.

I've run chkdsk /f and sfc /scannow. Chkdsk completes successfully and SFC mentions some files that cannot be fixed. I've used CCleaner to clean files and to clean the registry. AVG virus scan shows no problems. Spybot shows some adware but it's been removed and I'm still receiving the warning. No one but me has touched this computer.

I'm at a loss. I've seen you've had some success dealing with this issue, and rather than immediately call MS again, or do a clean or repair installation of Windows, I'm hopeful you can help. Here is the printout from the MGA diagnostic tool:

Hello Richard, welcome to Sysnative!

As Stephen said, Noel will be able to fix you up in no time at all, but it would help if we knew a little more information before he's online :) You're using an outdated version of MGADiag, could you delete it and run a scan with the latest version please:

MGADiag

  1. Download MGADiag (by Microsoft) from the link below:

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

  2. Run the tool by double clicking on the file. Press Continue when prompted
  3. When it has finished, press Copy then Paste (Ctrl+V) this into your next post

You said the computer shipped with Windows Vista, but your MGADiag log is showing that you have a Windows 7 SLIC table. SLIC tables are part of OEM licenses and either come straight out of the factory (you will have had a Vista SLIC table at some point) or are installed by activation exploits - the Daz Loader in particular. Have you ever installed the Daz Loader on this computer? It's no problem and we'll still be able to help you regardless of the answer as you clearly have a genuine Windows 7 retail license, but it will change things during the troubleshooting.

Tom

"DON'T PANIC!" - H-HGTTG

The Activation/Validation problem here is almost certainly a simple one - but as Tom says, using the older version of MGADiag doesn't help diagnosis.

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers
try downloading and installing them from here - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=22194

(you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report (with the new version of MGADiag, please!).

Hiya Noel, Stephen and Tom,

Thanks for getting on this. I really appreciate it. I’m sure you know how annoying and distracting an error like this can be. Fortunately, my computer still functions well.

Below is the information you requested in this thread and on your “Widows Update Forum Posting Instructions” thread. CBS.zip uploaded.View attachment 9115

Tom, to answer your question, no, I’ve never used Daz Loader on this or any other computer. (not sure what it is!)

Here’s a short, hopefully helpful history of this computer: It originally shipped with Vista. Did a clean install with upgrade retail Win 7. Hard drive crashed later. Did a clean install on new hard drive. Activation issues. MS Genuine Advantage gave me a new key. And recently, as I mentioned in the original post, I cloned a failing hard drive to a new hard drive, which has led me to the current issue.

Noel, I installed the Intel driver (iata_enu.exe) as you suggested. Now, where’s my towel?

Thanks, Richard

That's the non-genuine bit sorted, anyhow - I'll leave you to Tom's tender mercies for the cleanup of the CBS/SFC errors

@Noel, any idea why it's still showing a Windows 7 marker?

Code:
Windows marker version: 0x20001

@Richard, would you mind running SFC one more time for me please?

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Tom

Hi Gents,

Noel, I was able to validate my Win 7 online. Thanks you for that assistance.

Tom, here is the CBS.txt you requested: View attachment cbs.txt

And here is the most recent text from the SFC:
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
C:\Windows\system32>copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
1 file(s) copied.
C:\Windows\system32>

Again, thanks so much for helping me with this.

Richard

@Tom
If the BIOS was dated more recently than it is, I'd say it was possibly one of the ones that slipped out complete with SLIC (most were HP or Dell, I think)
However, here I think it has to be a Loader of some kind :(

Thanks Noel, it's a bit odd.

Hi Richard,

That's perfect, all of the problems have been fixed! You're good to go :)

Tom

P.S. We're a bit easier to deal with than MS Support eh? :p

Thank you very much Gentlemen. I appreciate your assistance more than I can say. Maybe I'll say it with a few $$$. Yes, Tom, this is much easier to deal with than MS tech support...by a country mile. And to Noel, "So long, and thanks for all the fish."

Richard
