I'm a little frazzled with all of this. You want me to reboot, use the DISM command, select all to invert the color, but the last time I did that I don't recall a log file being created. Please clarify.

How's this? :) The dism log is saved in two places, inside the CBS log being one of these, but the CBS log contains other information as well so I ask for the CBS log. Command Prompt Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it and press enter: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth When dism finishes scanning, zip up your CBS log and attach it to your next post please: C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Also, you want me to go to that path on my C drive and zip up that log? Click to expand... Yes, but only when dism has finished. If it would help, I could write a batch file for you that would run dism in the background, then copy the CBS log to your Desktop and tell you it's finished? Tom

No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Notepad and click on it Copy (Ctrl+C) all of the text in the following box and paste (Ctrl+V) it into Notepad Code: @echo off DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth copy %WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log %userprofile%\Desktop\CBS.txt start notepad.exe %userprofile%\Desktop\CBS.txt Go to File > Save As... and save it to your Desktop named fix.bat. Make sure you change the Save as type to All Files (*.*) Locate fix.bat on your Desktop and right click then select Run as administrator This will open a Notepad window with your CBS log in it when the command has completed. It will run in the background and shouldn't bother you, though I have no way of testing it as I don't have Windows 8. If it doesn't run in the background, then simply minimise any window it opens and let it run undisturbed please :) Tom

I can narrow it down one step further, to a problem with SFC or the registry, by analysing your components hive: Upload a file to Dropbox Note: If you prefer, the same techniques can be applied to your Skydrive however these instructions may not necessarily work for Skydrive. If you haven't already created a Dropbox account, please do so Here Although this procedure can be done directly through the website, it is much easier to do so via the Windows client which can be downloaded from the Dropbox website: https://www.dropbox.com/install After you have downloaded and installed that, you should now see Dropbox in your Favourites box in Windows Explorer. This is the folder that will be synchronised with the Dropbox servers, anything that you wish to back up online can be put in here, but today we will be using it to transfer files. To access your Dropbox folder, just click on the link in the top left hand corner of Windows Explorer (accessible from any location - Documents etc.). Alternatively, you can double click on the icon found in your system tray (next to the time). If you are still having issues locating this folder, unless otherwise specified, it can be found under this location: C:\Users\{Your username}\Dropbox Copy all of the following files to the Public folder in your Dropbox: C:\Windows\system32\config\components Select all files by pressing Ctrl+A then right-click and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder This will create a .zip file in your Public folder. On the components file (it has no file extension), right click on it and select Copy. Then go to your Desktop, right click in an area of empty space and click Paste. The components file will now be on your Desktop. Right-click on it once more, then click Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder and the file will be zipped up. A new file will appear on your Desktop, components.zip. This is the file I would like you to upload to SendSpace :) Free large file hosting. Send big files the easy way! When it has finished uploading, send me the link please. Tom
