I've seen numerous BSOD's of unknown cause on 8.1 systems
Most have a 2012 version of the Intel Management Engine software/HECIx64.sys driver
I have recommended updating this - but cannot pin it down as the cause (because of the many changes that we make to the system when trying to fix BSOD's)

That being said, I have pinned it down as being the cause for many systems not being able to upgrade to Win8.1
Today at work I updated a Lenovo S400 Touch to the latest version (9.5.10.1658) on the Lenovo site and that fixed it (it was the only change that I made to the system).
The most recent version at http://downloadcenter.intel.com is v9.5.15.1730

I suggest scanning all 8.1 systems for this driver and updating it proactively.

John, may I please ask what error message/code you are seeing from Windows Update for this problem? I have not heard of it until today and it would be great to know about in the Windows Update forum.

Thank you!

Richard

Hi Richard! When one downloads 8.1 from the Windows Store - the download fails and the error message is that 8.1 couldn't be installed. I haven't been able to find any error messages that point at the Intel MEI

Thanks a lot John :)

I seem to be having this problem on my laptop. My Intel storage drivers lead to my Intel display drivers causing a crash. It seems to be fairly random. Both drivers are August 2013 and September 2013 respectively. My HECIx64.sys driver is dated 2012.

Toshiba does not have an update to my chipset drivers. Intel won't install generic drivers on my system saying that my system is an OEM system and the drivers must be obtained from the system's manufacturer (Toshiba). I think I've reached an impasse. Guess I'll have to revert to Windows 8 until my system can properly support Windows 8.1 and the drivers it requires.
