[SOLVED] Win7 won't update since 4/12 (wuauserv 50% CPU usage)

I tried all the steps as outlined in this thread: svchost.exe using 50% CPU - Windows 7

I updated to NET Framework 4.6.1, manually installed KB3145739, then tried running Windows Update Troubleshooting Tool (error 0x80070057) and finally the Windows Update Readiness Tool (applied hotfix KB947821). When I run the Troubleshooting Tool once more, I still get error 0x80070057. My laptop fan starts running hot when wuauserv is running so I've been forced to disable Windows Update.

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) - Scan
Follow the instructions below to run a scan with the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) and provide a log;

• Download the right version of SURT for your system;
  • Your version of Windows is:
• Once downloaded, execute the installer, and go throught the installation (this process can take around 15-20 minutes);
• On completion, a log will be created in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log;
• Attach this log in your next reply;

Hi Aura, thanks for the reply.

I went ahead and did as you asked. Shockingly, the results come back as "No errors detected" (log attached). View attachment CheckSUR.log

I went ahead and re-enabled Windows Update to make sure everything is running okay. I'm still getting high CPU usage from time to time, but it doesn't seem to be related to wuauserv as far as I can tell. I also ran the Windows Update Troubleshooting Tool for good measure and I'm getting the same error message: 0x80070057 (not fixed).



So I guess my question now is...is my problem fixed? What's with the 0x80070057 error? Is my system up to date on all the latest updates? Thanks again for your assistance.

Your problem isn't fixed if you still cannot install Windows Updates :) Let's see what SFC have to say.

System File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;

• On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
  
  Run as Administrator
• On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
• On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
• Enter the command below and press on Enter;
  

  sfc /scannow

  Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
• Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
  

  copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

• A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;

Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't have the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

Aye aye, boss. I ran SFC and it said corrupt files were found and have successfully been repaired.

Hmm, when I manually search for updates, it tells me there are no important updates to install (optional updates are available). However, when I run the Windows Update diagnostic tool, I get a new error code 0x80080005, which is strange. I've uploaded the two files you requested for good measure. Thanks once again for all your help.

I don't see that error code in your logs. What is the service, process, etc. that gets that error code in the Windows Update Diagnostic Tool?

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I just ran the WindowsUpdateDiagnostic again and it came back clean. I am as confused about it as you probably are. I guess this means my problems are over (for now)? Thanks for all your assistance; I'm guessing one of your tips helped or it just worked itself out (?). Computers are a fickle beast. :noidea:

As of today (5/10), I'm having the exact same problem again. I had to disable Windows Update to prevent it from overloading my disk.

Nope, it just keeps searching forever and ever. I read on another board that manually installing KB3153199 helped. That's my next move...

EDIT: Applying the fix above seems to have quieted down noisy wuauserv as of right now (5/11). We'll see what happens next time updates roll out.

If the issue comeback next month, let me know. There's another update that we could install, though it addresses memory usages with svchost.exe during the Windows Update search, and not wuauserv.exe.
