Hi

Mydesktop machine runs windows home premium 32. My problem firstbecame apparent in late October when I returned from a 10 month roadtrip around Australia. During the time I was away the entire networkwas switched off and when I powered on it informed me that I had overeighty updates that needed to be installed. The problem was nomatter what I did I could not get them to install.

Pleasenote: All of the following procedures were only tried after manyhours of research and lurking on various forums and only after otherpeople had reported success.

Some ofthe things I have tried are using the “fixit” from Microsofthttp://diagnostics.support.microsof...389991&eventseqno=1&buttonclickno=3&_ext=.exe,
Didn'tfind problem

I triedanother utility I found at microsoft http://download.microsoft.com/downl...-00FD16337268/Windows6.1-KB947821-v31-x86.msu
Didn'tfind problem

Idownloaded and ran complete internet repair kit fromComplete Internet Repair - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download.com
Nodifference

Idownloaded and ran netfx verification tool from.NET Framework Setup Verification Tool User's Guide - Aaron Stebner's WebLog - Site Home - MSDN Blogs
Itreported all .NET frameworks OK

Iinterspersed these attempts with phone calls to my ISP who performedvarious “resets” of my connection. I should mention here that myconnection is via satellite. It had not given me problems previouslybut I had to rule it out

I alsostarted working through this troubleshooting procedure I found hereHow to troubleshoot problems connecting to Windows Update or to Microsoft Update.

Idecided to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter after each stepwhich as it's first step attempts to check for updates online so ifit doesn't progress past this step the problem still exists right?

Method1: Restart computer and try to install updates again.
Didn'twork

Method2: Run SUR tool. I had already run this several times with it notfinding any problems

Method3: Run SFC.exe
Noproblems detected

Method4: Reset content of catrooot2 folder
I had toremember some long forgotten DOS commands here to work through theirsketchy instructions but I got there eventually.
Nochange.

Method5: Remove incorrect Registry values.
This iswhere I came to a screaming halt. Following the instructions Iopened regedit and located H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE but I couldn't findCOMPONENTS so thinking this might be another case of sketchyinstructions I searched the entire registry and the only instance Ifound in the tree was under software. I decided to search google andfound on your forum a thread in which niemiro assisted doveman with asimilar problem, however a little way into the thread I came across awarning that the procedure only applied doveman's situation and notto try it on any other system.

This iswhere I decided to join your forum and (cap in hand) plead for help.

Thisproblem is sending me crazy. I have been working on it on and offfor months so please if niemiro or someone else is prepared to stepme through a procedure to get my updates back working I will beforever grateful.

I haveattached the CBS .zip file as instructed

I don'tknow if the following will be of any help but I'll include it as Iunderstand that in the past some updates themselves caused problemsjust by trying to install them.

Lookingat my update history, it appears that this was the first failure:

DefinitionUpdate for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition1.143.63.0)

Installationdate: ‎16/‎01/‎2013 7:57 PM

Installationstatus: Failed

Errordetails: Code 8007042C

Updatetype: Optional

Thenthis failed:

DefinitionUpdate for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition1.143.109.0)

Installationdate: ‎17/‎01/‎2013 7:48 PM

Installationstatus: Failed

Errordetails: Code 8007042C

Updatetype: Optional

I canprovide screen captures of the rest of the update history for thisperiod.

I can't work out how to attach the CBS .zip file I can't find the paper clip icon described in your instructions and "manage attachments doesn't appear to be working for me.
