[SOLVED] Win10 22H2 failure to install both KB5031356 & KB5031445

I'm on Windows 10 22H2, with two different updates failing to install. I had issues with KB5031356 which was released first, but paused updates for a week after seeing a lot of people struggling to install this one thinking they might patch it. Now they've added a preview update, KB5031445, which is supposed to be a resolution to the failure to install the first one (according to this page) but neither of them work.

Have done sfc scan (no integrity violations), dism cleanup (the restore operation complete successfully), Win10 update troubleshooter (says it fixed it and to try again on restart), reinstalled Microsoft Edge (after seeing that work for a few people), and manually installing both updates from Windows catalog. None of these worked, results are still as follows:

KB5031356 installs up to 100, then: "There were some problems installing updates, but we’ll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x800f081f)"

KB5031445 installs to 100, then installs from 0 to 100 yet again, then updates section shows as "all up to date" but on instructing it to check for new updates again, it confirms update failed with error code 0x800f081f saying "we couldn't install this update but you can try again."

Followed the posting instructions and files attached. Any help much appreciated.

Yes, I'm having to check manually as well, since once again I didn't receive notification of your reply.

Latest CBS.log looks good, please try updating Windows again.

If successful please let me know.

If not, please post the CBS.log created after your update attempt.

Nada. Unpaused updates, it started auto-downloading KB5031356 and also still showed KB5031445 available as optional again. I selected to download the second one too, it moved to that update being downloaded only, followed by the exact same results/error messages as I started with.

Out of curiosity, I've got a couple other Win10 computers I do IT for at home, I've managed to install KB5031445 successfully on two of those, but they never showed KB5031356 as an option and seemed to bypass the first one entirely, so I'm wondering if the issues might be related to trying to install both of these instead of just the later update (which was supposed to be a bundled resolution to issues with the first)? Just a thought.

CBS attached.

So far, your problems appear to be due to missing/corrupt files and/or registry settings. Unfortunately Windows has a habit of only partially flagging the ones that are problematic, so as you fix one it then reveals another.

Such is the case here. The first one's we fixed caused the second to be flagged, and now we're seeing a third different set. All so far appear to be related to Windows Defender, so presumably it's a definition update that's causing problems.

Got to go out for an hour or so now, but will post a fix for the latest flagged entries when I get back.

Ah, right. Wasn't sure if it was relevant or not.

No prob, I'll around for a while yet today.

Please can you do the following for me ...

  • Click on the Search button and type Cmd
  • From the search results choose Command Prompt then Run as Administrator
  • When prompted by UAC allow the prompt.
  • When the Command Prompt Window opens, copy and paste the following command into it, then press Enter
wusa /uninstall /KB:5031445
  • Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.

Yes, I thought it would.

OK, in that case, please do the following ...

  • Click Search and type CMD
  • Right click the CMD App from the search results and select Run as Administrator
  • With the App open ...
    • Copy/Paste the following Command into it ...
    • reg load HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\COMPONENTS
      • This loads your COMPONENT hive.
    • You can now close the Command window.
  • Next ...
  • Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop
    • Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST
  • Right-click on FRST64.exe and choose Run as administrator
    • Copy and paste ... KB5031445 ... into the Search box.
    • Click the Search Registry button.
    • When the scan is complete ...
      • A log will open on your Desktop ... SearchReg.txt
    • Attach the file ... SearchReg.txt ... to your next reply.
  • You may close any remaining open windows now.

OK, that's not what I expected to see.

So, please do the following ...

  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it on your desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

OK, latest log looks clear, so please try updating again.

If possible don't try installing update KB5031445, let's just keep it to KB5031356 for the time being.

If successful please let me know.

If not, please post me your latest CBS.log

Allowed it to only try KB5031356, same error result as last time:
There were some problems installing updates, but we’ll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x800f081f)

Latest logs flagged the same items that we "fixed" in post #15, which means that it most likely wasn't just the manifest files, but their accompanying registry entries that may need attention.

So to check if this is the case, can you please post me a copy of your COMPONENTS hive ....

  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • The file will likely be too large to upload here, if so please upload to a file sharing service.
  • Examples of services to upload to are WeTransfer and TransferKit and SendFileOnline

Please post me the link to the file
