Hello! I have a Win 7 Release Candidate ISO that I modified with RT Seven Lite to strip down unnecessary components. I downloaded the standalone Win 7 SP1 update package 900MB from Microsoft and tried to update. After running SFC Fix and then updating again, I am presented with this error in my CBS logs (both attached). Please ignore the SP1 "branding" on my machine, I am running Release Canditate Win 7 but the registry value was modified to "say" it's running SP1. I have had so much trouble installing SP1 I modified the registry just to install programs that have SP1 as a requirement. I only really need / want to run "Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015" but cannot do so because SP1 is required. Please help! Thank you and God bless :)

My error from CBS.log:
Package_for_KB976932~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.17514 [HRESULT = 0x80070002 - ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND]

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. The errors you have suggest a corrupt component hive and/or too many corruptions to resolve. Let's take a look however.
Code:
2016-03-07 18:51:27, Error CBS SPI: (CheckForPendingFlag:90)Failed to open component hive at C:\Windows\System32\config\components er=0x0
AutoAnalysis::
SUMMARY: Some corruptions could not be fixed automatically. Seek advice from helper or sysnative.com.
   CBS & SFC total detected corruption count: 5057

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Thanks. Please do the following.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

While we work on this machine, are you able to change the registry flags back so it doesn't "think" it's Windows 7 SP1?

Yes :) I believe I can redo that setting. Do you have a Win 7 RC machine available? I need to know the correct values in RegEdit
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet001\Control\Windows\
CSDBuildNumber (D-Word 32bit)
CSDVersion (D-Word 32bit)
Thank you!

Yes I do. You should be able to put this in notepad and save as a .reg file and then merge into your registry.

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows]
"CSDVersion"=dword:00000000
"CSDBuildNumber"=dword:00004001

Good. Please run the following. It's just to gather some info. Before we continue however. Is this a corporate machine? Is there an IT Department that should be aware of us assisting with this?

Step#1 - Gather Info
1. Download SFCFix.exe and save this to your Desktop.
2. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
3. Double click on SFCFix.exe to open it.
4. Follow all on screen instructions and upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop named SFCFix.txt.
5. Please post the contents of this log in your next post. Thank you.

Oh no, I am my own IT consultant for an Architecture firm. :) Probably should have not used the word corporate, we only have 4 people ha, I'm it!

Do you still have your Windows 7 RC ISO? With that many corruptions the best and easiest thing to do would be to perform a repair installation. All of your programs and data will stay intact. Once the repair is done then you should be able to download and install SP1.

Instructions for the repair install are below. Please let me know.
