[SOLVED] Win 7 Service Pack 1 won't install error code 80073712

Hiya,

I'm attempting to sort out my son's PC. OS is windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. It's running very slowly and the update history shows it has failed repeatedly to load Service Pack 1 since 17/2/12. Can't update the browser from IE9. Have run Hotfix Windows6.1KB947821-v32-x64 and sfc scannow found nothing wrong.

I have run regbak and uploaded the COMPONENTS.zip to the drive below:

Hello Jonboy, and welcome to Sysnative!

How long did you let the System Update Readiness Tool run for? Did you cancel it part way through? It looks like it didn't complete. Anyway, I may as well fix the corruptions already reported.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.


  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFixScript.zip, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFixScript.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.


Once complete, please re-run the System Update Readiness Tool, let it run for at least two hours (cancel if taking longer than that) and post a new CheckSUR.log.

Also please re-test IE9 et al.

I did stop the surt tool by accident 2nd or 3rd time I'd run it and I did think the log was odd.

I've done as you asked and have attached the SFCfix.log.

That didn't go quite right. SFCFix ran without the script file. Can you please follow the instructions once again, absolutely to the letter. You aren't trying just to run SFCFix.exe, but to download it to your Desktop, download SFCFixScript.zip alongside it, then drag and drop SFCFixScript.zip on top of SFCFix.exe.

Thanks for the tutorial on .cat, .mum and manifests.

You haven't covered CSI Payload files but I've read a Microsoft Support page for KB2700601 which basically states that having copied the missing file it should then be placed into the proper subdirectory under %windir%\winsxs.

I can see that replacing 30 missing payload files is a job of work, but I'm happy to have a go myself. My problem is I can find similar files but can't match the last batch of numbers in the folder title. Does this matter? For example trying to match the first missing payload file above -
x86_microsoft-windows-ie-devtools_31bf3856ad364e35_9.4.8112.16447_none_541511725a377f88

the closest I have found is
x86_microsoft-windows-ie-devtools_31bf3856ad364e35_9.4.8112.16441_none_540f0fb65a2ce77e

Will this work?

There is also instruction on changing permissions if necessary which goes beyond my understanding.

All fell into place when I started the exercise. Yes and sussed the change permissions procedure - first change ownership then modify, transfer file, undo modify, revert to system ownership.

Now to see if Service Pack 1 installs at last?

Thought I would get an invitation to update to IE10/11 but I'll look into that?
