Hi
I've just joined the Sysnative and have some limited knowledge of the windows system but I can see I am among experts.

My issue is one that I see others have had in the past. Firstly some info, I have win 10 Pro at Version 1809 and os build 17763.475.
I have been attempting to install the following:

2019-05 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1809 for x64-based Systems (KB4497934) and keep getting Error 0x80070246

I have performed all the usual actions, deleted softwaredistribution files and reset catroot2. with the associated stops and starts of relevant processes.
I've run chkdsk with no issues. sfc /scannow will not run even in safe mode - resource protection system could not..... etc

CBS log shows a series of illegal character results the first of which is:

2019-06-10 16:53:49, Info CSI 00000002@2019/6/10:15:53:49.220 PopulateComponentFamiliesKey - Begin
2019-06-10 16:53:58, Error CSI 00000003@2019/6/10:15:53:58.174 (F) onecore\base\lstring\lblob.cpp(2133): Error STATUS_ILLEGAL_CHARACTER originated in function RtlTranscodeLBlobs expression: __rv.UcsCharacter != (0xffffffff)
[gle=0x80004005]

I am feeling as sure as I can be that I have a corrupted Components hive.
I 've noticed that this hive is sometimes uploaded for correction and I would like to know what tools and process I can perform to try to get to the bottom of this problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

As a beginner, I have posted this in the Beginner category. Should I redirect it to a Windows update section?

I had to take action. So for anyone else with this problem. Here is what I did.
Downloaded the latest win10 image using MS Image creation tool (allows selection of Home, Pro etc) and chose to burn the iso image to a dvd. You can choose usb if you wish.

Be aware that if you run your repair/upgrade from dvd then at this time and until MS release an update, the repair/upgrade will fail if you have any usb or any other drives connected to your computer. You will need to remove these devices to perform a successful repair/upgrade in this way

However you can run it from the iso image you downloaded to your pc. Double click setup.exe and MS takes care of the rest. You get the option to update/repair whilst retaining your personal data and third party apps already installed. Do a full image backup to an external device first.

I was apprehensive about this route but the process though lengthy in time worked perfectly. My Component hive corruption was solved and all apps work as before.

Hope this helps

Peter
