W7 Auto update working fine but task bar has Alert flag with red cross.

Ah I see. I assume you already tried the fixit and most of the suggested fixes by now. This problem is so strange.

I've tried the fixit. I've reset the windows update components manually. I've tried replacing the wuauserv registry entries with default ones. I even tried restoring services via the Windows AIO repair tool from tweaking.com.

I've solved problems with windows update numerous times on multiple operating systems but this one leaves me completely clueless.

For all intensive purposes, windows update works fine but the Action Center reports an issue and when I run the fixit, it ALWAYS claims to fix something but nothing changes.

Yes, I tried all the fixes suggested and I am reasonably competent with PC's and Windows and have fixed many of the family's pc problems with the aid of the internet, but not this one.

Maybe one of the bright people on here will find the solution....

I am having the exact same problem. I have searched for hours to try to find a resolution to this problem. I've tried just about every "fix" suggested. No success. I hope someone will find an answer. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium.

Sorry niemiro for clogging the thread. It was the only place I found any discussion about this strange little issue. My hope was that either I would eventually solve it and then I could provide some insight or maybe d.stinson would figure it out and share some with me.

Just an update for you d.stinson. The drive I had this problem on ended up dying. Now, whether or not these events are related, I can't be certain. Initially I had run chkdsk and let it auto repair some bad clusters and the drive seemed to be operating normally. A week later though, the drive stopped functioning. Just wanted to throw that out there in case they were related.

That being said, I'm sure niemiro will be able to offer more insight on the problem than I and again sorry niemiro for not creating my own thread. I wish you guys the best of luck in resolving this.

JF3_MBC, sorry to hear about your hard disk. In may case, the disk is fine and chkdsk shows no errors and I have had the problem for very many months with no disk issues, so I "suspect" yours may be a coincidence.

For me this started after applying the most recent updates (some update failed as another simultaneous software operation filled my entire HDD space, if that matters).
Only thing I've changed about my OS recently is uninstalling ESET System Security.
Really weird message, but it causes no harm...
