Hello, I first lost the Aero Theme, which I think I fixed, by replacing the Aero.msstyles file. So far the theme works and I no longer see that Aero.msstyles is listed as corrupt when I run SFC /SCANNOW. Then, the Windows Sidebar keeps closing and auto restarting many times per session. After the Sidebar restarts, a notification pops up in system tray which says something similar to, "Data Execution Prevention closed Sidebar to save data loss". As I remember other issues, I'll add them. Do you think a bad defrag may have caused this corruption? Which paid/free defrag programs are best/safest?

Thanks in advance for your help,
Don

Hello and welcome,

Windows Vista is an old OS which doesn't receive updates anymore. The hard disk might may at its end of life.
Please follow the instructions below before repairing the corrupted files.

Extract the .zip file into a new folder.
In this new folder, run the tool DiskInfo.
When the tool is finished, it will show some information about the hard disc.
Note: Resize the window so that all information is visible.
Take a screenshot. Read this on how to take a screenshot.
Upload the image file to a file-sharing site and post the download link.

The disk looks okay, despite the age.

PeterJ, Looks like 1/9 (ehres.dll) was successful copied so far, that's a start. 8 others had Warning: File was not backed up as that would replace the current backup, with Failed to copy file with error code 0x4C8.

PeterJ, I was able to get sfc.exe to read no corruptions. What finally worked was rebooting into Safe Mode and running the zip script via sfc.exe, but that wasn't all. A few corruptions still didn't get fixed until I, still in Safe Mode, located the rest of the corrupt files and renaming each of them ***OLD. Finally SFC.exe showed all of them fixed, so I rebooted and then ran SFC /Scannow which fixed the same few leftovers, but in the system32 and fonts folders instead of the winsxs folder.
The sidebar still closes and restarts because of the DEP stated in the OP.

Are there any other steps to finalize the corruption fixes?
Any idea about the Sidebar glitch?

Please post the log file SFCFix.txt on your desktop and the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

Uninstall "Process Lasso" and reboot the machine.
Does that fix the DEP issue ?

No that didn't fix the sidebar DEP issue. Sidebar always had worked even with PL too. Thanks, good try though.

Upload the image file to a file-sharing site such as Filedropper or SendSpace and post the downloadlink.

Open an elevated command prompt, paste following command into it then press enter.

wmic OS Get DataExecutionPrevention_SupportPolicy

When finished take a screenshot of the command prompt window and paste it into your next reply.
