Upgrade From Windows 8 to Windows 8.1
If you are currently running Windows 8 (kernel build 9200), you should upgrade to Windows 8.1 (kernel build number 9600).

Windows Server 2012 R2 Update
The Windows 8.1 upgrade is identical for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 R2.
The first thing to do is to make sure that ALL Windows Updates are installed as there are prerequisite Windows Updates that must be installed first before the actual Windows 8.1 update itself (
kb2919355).

kb2919355, Microsoft advises:
Important: When you install this update (2919355) from Windows Update, updates 2932046, 2937592, 2938439, 2934018, and 2959977 are included in the installation.
Important: This update (2919355) replaces update
2883200 . You don't have to install update 2883200 after you install this update.
This is the recommended sequence of installing Windows Updates to assure the best possible outcome for the successful installation of Windows 8.1:
If the above mentioned Windows Updates (with the exception of kb2919355 - Windows 8.1 itself) are already installed, then all you have to do is to install kb2919355 - the Windows 8.1 update.
