I have been trying to upgrade Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 10.

I have run chkdsk / scan disk - no issues
I have run windows updates - one will not install (KB4539601)
Unplugged peripherals
Turned off antivirust/security software

Incidentally, each attempt it painfully slow, taking at least 1 hour to get to the point where Windows 7 is rolled back. It's painful.

Hello and welcome,

Attach the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log also.

Hi. I noticed that was a file asked for in other threads but there is no such file on my machine. The log files I have in that directory are DeepClean.log and FilterList.log. I can't find CheckSUR.log anywhere on my machine. That folder also has a number of cabinet files. Attaching the other logs files just in case it is helpful.

I have now found and downloaded the "System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821)" and tried to run it to generate the CheckSUR.log but it won't install. Installer encoutered and error 0x8024800x.

Wait let me try rebooting and installing...

OK It's running now, at a snails pace. It has been going for over an hour and drip feeding a LOT (200+ so far) of CBS MUM Missing records. It's still running but will attach the file so far in case it means there is something else I have to fix first...

OK this took 4 hours to run. Is that normal?
It can take some time to run, especially the first time it is used.
Lets start with the 2 FRST logs.

Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.
  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  7. Attach the logfile Fixlog.txt to your next reply.

Step 1:
WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread only. No one else should follow these instructions, as it could damage your system.
  • Download
    myjIXnC.png
SFCFix and move the executable to your desktop.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it on your desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Attach that file to your next reply.

Step 2:
Start the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
On completion, attach the logfile C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log to your next reply.

BTW I'm not sure how to rerun the System Update Readiness Tool. The only info I have found on this says it is initiated when the package is first installed. As it is already on my machine, I can't install it without uninstalling it and I don't see another way to launch it. Do I need to uninstall it first or is there a command that will launch it?

All the command line instructions I have found are for DISM.
DISM /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Does that do the same thing? If so, which of these 3 should I run? thanks

Try this:
Click the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each.

Code:
CD D:\Desktop
Code:
SFCFix D:\Desktop\SFCFix.zip

Tell me if SFCFix runs fine or if it crashes again.

Extract the zip file manually.
Provide the full extracted folder.

OK I dropped the extracted folder onto SFCfix and got this...

SFCFix version 3.0.2.1 by niemiro.

Microsoft Windows 7 Service Pack 1 - amd64

I asked for the name of the full extracted folder only. Do not run SFCFix get.

Per my earlier question, I'm not sure how to rerun SURT
We'll deal with this later. First we need to run the SFCFix script successfully.

Sorry when you said "provide the full extract folder" I didn't understand you were asking for the name. I thought the name would be clear from the file contents of the zip file above.

It extracts to folder called Packages and a file called SFCFix.txt with the contents

::
{ARCHIVE}\packages %SystemRoot%\servicing\packages [DIR]

The folder packages has 1274 files. I've attached their names in a file attached.

The reason I asked in advance about SURT is that given we are in a different timezone (you typically reply after midnight my time), knowing how to take the next step might save me a day. Anyway I appreciate any help you can provide.
