Hi All, I have seen how helpful you've been with other users and wonder if I might be able to get some assistance.

Operating Windows 10. My machine wants to do an update, and asks me to restart so that the update can take place. I think it's a fairly significant one as it takes quite a long time - I haven't watched the whole thing, but after a couple of hours or so (approx) I come back in and get the message UNDOING CHANGES MADE TO YOUR COMPUTER.

After trying this a few times and googling on several different forums I have tried a few different things to solve the issue but so far nothing is working.

Worth noting that generally my computer is working fine, although it's a few years old now (I think about 7ish).

Things I have tried:
- Run DISM command, I think when doing this I get the following message: The WOF driver encountered a corruption
- Run SFC Scan
- Used Windows Update Troubleshooter
- I've also reinstalled windows, but without removing my files and apps (can't remember what this process is called)

Now I have tried your steps but unfortunately the SFCFix also encountered issues: SFCFix version 3.0.2.1 by niemiro has encountered an unhandled exception.

I will attach the SFCFix report along with the CBS.zip folder, hoping someone may be able to help.

Many thanks,
James

Hi I'm Gary R,

I'm a Security Analyst, and a Windows Update Trainee, and I'd like to help you with your problems.

As a trainee, any instructions I give you must first be checked by a qualified update expert, before I post them. This will by necessity introduce some delay to any of my replies, so please be patient.

I am looking over your logs now, and will be back as soon as I've finished analysing them.

WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread only. No one else should follow these instructions, as it could damage your system.

  • Download SFCFix.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and also save it on your desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt
  • Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply.

Next ...

  • Restart the computer.
  • Run the command SFC /SCANNOW in an elevated command prompt and report the result.
  • If it fails, attach a zipped C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log to your next reply.

Hi again Gary, I have now ran the SFC /SCANNOW command, and it completed!

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

should I now try to install the updates?

Many thanks,
James

Yes, please try updating.

If successful, let me know.

If not, please post your ... C:\Windows\logs\CBS\CBS.log

Hi Gary, I think that's solved it in one go!

I wasn't able to monitor my computer during the update process but as far as I can tell the update went through fine (I'm no longer getting a notification to update my machine, so I think that means the resolution was successful)...

Thanks so much for your help, this is a brilliant service you are all providing.

With best wishes,
James

You're welcome. Glad we could help.

Thanks for letting me know. (y)

As things seem to be fixed now, I'll mark this topic as solved.

Hi again Gary - sorry, it looks like I spoke too soon, and I am now encountering errors when trying to run the latest update.

Is it possible to reopen the topic? I will again attach my CBS log here...

hoping you might be able to assist again. Please let me know if I should start a new thread or if this one can be reviewed.

Many thanks,

Sure, no problem. I've "unsolved" the topic, and I'm now looking over your latest CBS.log

Getting a bit late here, so it will probably be sometime tomorrow at the earliest that I get back to you.

  • Click Search button and type Command Prompt
  • From the results, right click on the Command Prompt icon, and select Run as administrator
  • A Command Window will open.
  • Copy paste the command below into it, then press Enter
  • Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  • Once DISM has finished running ...
    • Please attach your ... C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log ... to your next reply.
  • If the file is too large, upload it to a file sharing service, and post me the link.
  • Examples of services to upload to are WeTransfer and TransferKit and SendFileOnline

Looking over your logs now, back ASAP.

Were you able to run DISM and SFC, and did they each run to completion ?

Hi Gary,

Sorry was just posting that before running the other commands. Yes, I have now run DISM and SFC.

Both ran to completion, SFC said corrupt files were found and successfully repaired.

JPEG attached, along with CBS log.

I'll now try to re-run the update installation process..

Yes please do that, and let me know whether you're successful or not.

Hi Gary, I think it has gone through.. I left it running overnight as the process takes a while, but I'm not totally clear on how to check.

I think last time I went to this page (attached) it said 'updates were unsuccessful' or something along those lines...

so hopefully it worked! Is it okay to leave the thread open for a few days just to check? If I get no more notifications to update in that time then I'll come back and confirm if it has worked...

Many thanks!
James

(It now says I need to restart again, which I will do after work - hopefully this will take less time and means the the issue is fixed! will report back)
