Trying to Update Windows 7 PC to 10 - Nothing but trouble...

Have been trying off and on to update my old Windows 7 PC - have had multiple errors when running Windows Update for over a year, and was going to try to upgrade directly to Windows 10 without updating but when i try to do a system backup, I get an 'Access is Denied (0x8007005)' error. Before going any further (and potentially turning my PC into a boat anchor), I read great things about Sysnative, and thought I would give you a try.

Not sure if this is enough to get started - the ComponentsScanner file is attached and here is the linked to the CBS.zip file Gofile - Free Unlimited File Sharing and Storage.

Please let me know - thanks,
John

Hello and welcome,

The 'Access is Denied (0x8007005)' error is about 1 year old. The latest information doesn't show that error.
Please do following so we get more information about your machine.

FRST Scan:
  1. Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
64-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.
  2. Right-click to run the tool as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  3. Note: Ensure that the Addition.txt check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.
  4. Press the Scan button.
  5. Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
  6. Post the logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Thank you for the quick response! I am not sure if I did something incorrectly; while it has happened before, I had tried to do a full system backup today and got the same Access Denied error.

The two logfiles are attached.

Regards,
John

There are 2 programs installed which are provided by AOL. Do you need/use them ?

Step 1:
Uninstall following programs:
- AOL Uninstaller
- Microsoft VC9 runtime libraries

Step 2:

  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  7. Attach the logfile Fixlog.txt to your next reply.

I cannot find a method to uninstall the AOL uninstaller - I can uninstall the old AOL software but i don't see a means to remove the uninstaller itself. I did locate the uninstaller executable if that helps...

I also cannot locate the Microsoft VC9 runtime libraries, and/or how to uninstall them (they do not show up in the Uninstall list in the control panel).

Please let me know if you can point me in the right direction (my lack of knowledge in this regard is very apparent - sorry!)

Files attached. In case it means anything, the fixlog.txt (Step 1) was generated very quickly, and no restart was encountered.

Try to uninstall "Microsoft VC9 runtime libraries" again and report the result.

"Microsoft VC9 runtime libraries" showed up in the 'Uninstall or change a program' list this time, and appeared to successfully uninstall (i.e. the uninstall ran to completion and while no final message was displayed, the libraries no longer appear in the list)

  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each.

    Code:
    sfc /scannow
Wait for this to finish before you continue

    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.
Note: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Gofile or WeTransfer and just provide the download link.

Great.
Are you able to create a system backup now as mentioned in your initial post ?

Unfortunately, no - i just tried it and get the same 'Access is Denied (0x8007005)' error.
