Every month, sometimes every 2 months - usually around the 23/24th, this system goes nuts.

It will stay up for ~15 min, then freezes, but I can still move the mouse, HDD light doing its normal thing (light not solid); 2.1 GB/4 RAM used; CPU does not pin.

Hard shut down followed by reboot gives me another 15 min. This has been going on since 1pm today.

- ran MB - all clean
- rstrui
- sfc

By tonight/ tomorrow all will return to normal.

No idea what's going on here; has been occuring since 2010 (2011-?) based on identical yet rare Event Viewer logged line items.

Also, the rarely seen "Must close Windows OS.. to continue" screen has been seen each time - never outside of these few perplexing days over several years.

My 1st thought too. Nothing in Task Sched.

ProcExp shows nothing unusual running.

Although it doesn't fit the date scenario, you didn't mention checking the temperature/fans, unless I completely overlooked it.

How frequently do you shutdown or at least hibernate so the system can "rest"? I don't mean the 108 reboots, I mean actual shutdown for a period of time.

Did you just update Windows Live????

I installed the Live update today and my computer seemed to run a little slower...

This system rarely gets rest. I do keep an eye on temps & clean the system every week or two.

Ihteresting to see 4487s uptime; it has been every 12-18 min for hours now. Maybe the end is near!

Wow... That is a LONG time for a laptop!!!!

I reboot for Windows Updates; rarely ever else.

The system does sleep when I do.

There is a reason MTBF (mean time before failure) is measured in Power on hours!!!!!:rofl12:

Seriously, John... You should shut your laptop more often... and even disconnect it from the wall occasionally!

Yeah, but you don't sleep. :hysterical:

Since you indicated this has been going on for a while, instead of using sleep mode, for the next month try either shutdown or hibernate when you go to sleep. Yes, it will take a bit longer for you to access the computer, but you can hit the power button, wash your face, logon, get your coffee and you'll be ready to go.

Hi, go to search and type: eventvwr.msc expand windows logs and highlight "system" to the right select "filter current log" then proceed thus:-

What could happen? It's 3.5 years old, has travelled the USA and made 20,000+ posts! This laptop has long out-lived all others here.

Problem subsided... for now, anyway -

20 unexpected shutdowns 24-25 April.

Can we have a jcgriff2 report please? Even though you're not experiencing BSOD's?

Thanks for the link, John! :lolg:

Thanks!

There is a reason MTBF (mean time before failure) is measured in Power on hours!!!!!:rofl12:

Seriously, John... You should shut your laptop more often... and even disconnect it from the wall occasionally!

What could happen? It's 3.5 years old, has travelled the USA and made 20,000+ posts! This laptop has long out-lived all others here.

Problem subsided... for now, anyway -

Catastrophic failure... IMHO you have been very lucky... HP does not have a good track record!!! Although I suspect that you take better care of your system than most...

Although your SMART is showing as passed... I would still run a full diagnostic on your HDD to be sure that it is healthy.

You do keep backups... right???

HDD passed SeaTools LONG test 2 days ago.

HDD was replaced Summer 2010.

Backups... good idea!

Actually, the only reason that I asked for the jcgriff2 was so I could look at the System and Application log files from Event Viewer.

Lot's of unexpected shutdowns in the System logfile on 25 April
One error for an ESET service.

Lot's of iexplore crashes and Windows update problems in the Application logfile.

This install of Win7 is about 2 years old. I'd first think about a backup and a clean install of Win7 SP1
If the problem continues after that, then a huge battery of hardware diags will be needed to isolate the reason for the unexpected shutdowns.
Meanwhile, keep the system on a hard surface - or, preferably, a laptop cooling pad and see if that helps.

Good luck John!

Yeah... reinstall is long overdue for me.

At least 1 system here is done every 1-2 weeks.
