Hi guys,

This afternoon I've started having a complete plague of BSODs, and am barely able to keep my machine running for more than 15 minutes before a crash.

I'm very confused as this PC has been running fine for 3yrs now with no issues. The only major hardware change recently was a new SSD in June.

What makes this more concerning is the fact I'm having program crashes as well. For example Firefox and Spotify are crashing or locking up randomly every few minutes (when the PC isn't blue screening that is). Random WER popups are appearing. SFC is clear.

There doesn't seem to be a pattern to the dumps but they're uploaded (https://stephenfoulds.com/SysnativeFileCollectionApp.zip) to see if anyone can dig a bit deeper than I can. It's been sat in Safe Mode for a while now and hasn't crashed yet so I'm hoping for a software issue rather than a hardware one. I have 2 kernel dumps but the PC is crashing before I have a chance to wait for them to finish uploading

Boot SSD is made by ADATA and their diagnostic tools return no issues. Secondary SSD from Samsung also shows no issues.

Have quickly run 2 passes of memtest86 which showed no issues, but will run a full test overnight.

Hi Stephen,

Could you also upload C:\Windows\Inf\setupapi.dev.log and Event Logs? It would be nice to see if any new device drivers were automatically installed for some reason or other over the last few days.

This report also contains technical information about the state of the application when it crashed.

Event Viewer (sorry for many posts, but it's so unstable the tab in FF crashes before I have time to write anything longer)

I would uninstall ESET and/or any other security software you have installed and use Microsoft Defender / Windows Firewall instead.

Good shout on swapping RAM around, I'll give that a shot in the morning.

I've removed ESET (did thay shortly after posting) but no luck unfortunately, still crashing

Of the 5 dmp files only 4 of them are readable.
I find the 3b interesting

DEFAULT_BUCKET_ID: WIN8_DRIVER_FAULT PROCESS_NAME: bvckup2.exe FAILURE_BUCKET_ID: 0x3B_Ntfs!unknown_function

Try disabling the Bvckup2 freeware.

And the last one names memory corruption
Probably caused by : memory_corruption ( nt!MiUnlinkNodeLargePage+447 )

Since I see both NTFS.sys and Memory Corruption in the dumps I always recommend checking and platter hard drives with the tools from the drive manufacturer.

I'm willing to bet on RAM. Had this issue twice on both my computers, both RAMs were Kingstons. One computer passed Memtest, but the other failed immediately.

I've looked at the dumps, If possible temporarily uninstall all the Asus utilities as they have been known to cause issues in the past.

I would also recommend that you temporarily detach and uninstall your webcam should RAM not be at fault.

I noticed that Bvckup 2 was mentioned in one of the dumps, so it may be worth temporarily removing it or checking the integrity of the files (maybe even run a chkdsk)...

From what I have seen, all of your 4 dumps (one was unreadable) have different error codes, which can be an indicator of faulty RAM.

I've also noticed that you are running an outdated BIOS version, so I'd recommend you flash the latest one: Z170I PRO GAMING BIOS & FIRMWARE | Motherboards | ASUS USA

1. I suggest uninsalling whatever ASUS software is giving you IOMap64.sys.

2. If you have any SanDisk memory stick plugged into your computer, unplug it now.

3. If you don't, but you do have a SanDisk SSD, I'd suggest backing up all data on your SSD and updating storage drivers & firmware.

My money is on this being a faulty USB flash drive.

The fact that one dump was -0- bytes + as wrench pointed out - seeing ntfs.sys leads me to the hard drives.

It looks like that you have 2 HDDs and 1 SSD - Samsung SSD 850 EVO

Check for firmware upgrade - SSD Tools & Software | Download | Samsung V-NAND SSD

SeaTools for DOS, LONG test on the HDDs - Hard Drive (HDD) Diagnostics (Sea Tools for DOS) & SSD Test

And... the ntfs dump had a backup program running -

EDIT:
I just re-read post #1 and see that you have 2 SSDs.

ADATA firmware upgrade - https://www.adata.com/en/ss/software-6/

Don't forget that SSDs act like RAM and can give off typical RAM bugchecks.

Thanks for all the replies - really appreciate it. Am working through troubleshooting steps now.

I've removed all ASUS programs. The Sandisk USB drive was only in the system so I could create a Memtest86 boot drive, BSODs were occurring before I attached the drive. No Sandisk SSDs. Firmware is up to date on both SSDs. Bvckup disabled (still installed, but not running). Still crashing unfortunately :(

Latest dumps: https://stephenfoulds.com/Dumps.zip

Am going to switch around the RAM now and remove modules/swap slots and see if anything changes.

I still think we're looking at unknown hardware failure, but what hardware, I don't know.

I see bugcheck 139 with 0x0 for all 4 parms. This is kernel corruption.

You also have bugcheck 0x1 - APC index mismatch (very rare)
APC_INDEX_MISMATCH (1)
This is a kernel internal error. The most common reason to see this
bugcheck is when a filesystem or a driver has a mismatched number of
calls to disable and re-enable APCs. The key data item is the
Thread->CombinedApcDisable field. This consists of two separate 16-bit
fields, the SpecialApcDisable and the KernelApcDisable. A negative value
of either indicates that a driver has disabled special or normal APCs
(respectively) without re-enabling them; a positive value indicates that
a driver has enabled special or normal APCs (respectively) too many times.

You have a 0x3b bugcheck - system service threw an exception; the exception = 0x80000003 (rare).

rdbss.sys tried to reference memory that is no longer available and that backup program was running at the time.

Please clean out your \minidump file for future BSODs (copy them somewhere please).

I hate to mention this, but given the -0- byte dump yesterday, could this be PSU issue?

John

Latest update...

This morning I booted the system off an external SSD running Linux - system ran a stress test for 45 minutes without issue.

I am currently testing RAM. I removed one stick earlier and it still BSOD'd. Switched to the other stick and it ran fine for 2hrs. Have now put both sticks back in and it's been running for 30 minutes now and hasn't crashed yet. Perhaps simply re-seating the RAM has helped. That said, I have also disconnected both my HDD and other SSD for now, so will connect them back up in a bit and see if the BSODs start again.

It's very strange, and I am suspecting hardware issues of some kind.

I think the 0 byte dump was caused by me force powering off the system whilst it was creating the dump, but I can't guarantee that. Will definitely keep an eye out for more 0 byte dumps though.

Will clear out the Minidump folder - the dumps are archived on my server if we need historical dumps. Have a selection of full Kernel dumps if anyone needs them.

Thanks again everyone.

Very good idea. This will also help us in determining whether or not there is a problem with one of those drives &/or the content.

Perhaps simply re-seating the RAM has helped.
I have found this to be a solution before, Stephen.

It's very strange, and I am suspecting hardware issues of some kind.
I definitely agree with this, Stephen, as varying bugchecks alone are a very good indication that unknown hardware failure is the likely cause.

I think the 0 byte dump was caused by me force powering off the system whilst it was creating the dump, but I can't guarantee that. Will definitely keep an eye out for more 0 byte dumps though.
Good.

Usually, a zero-byte dump indicates that the system came down so fast that Windows did not have time to write a dump file. Often, this equates to a PSU problem.

Will clear out the Minidump folder - the dumps are archived on my server if we need historical dumps. Have a selection of full Kernel dumps if anyone needs them.
Thank you, Stephen.

I prefer to work with just the latest dumps to see if there is any pattern in the bugchecks of the newest dumps and/or any of the 4 parms. It was easy enough to delete the prior dumps from this run, but the longer it goes on, the harder it becomes to delete the previously-processed dumps from the current group that I'm about to run (due to the number involved. Thank you for this as it will speed up the overall processing for me when dealing with future dumps. :-)

Sincerely. . .

John

I'm the same way. That was one of the features I wrote into the app. You can change the options to process only the newest .dmp files in a list and it skips any it has processed during previous analysis.

I had forgotten that your app did this automatically, Mike, and ended up doing a quick manual eyeball of the size of the dumps to determine which dumps to eliminate from this current run.

This is getting really frustrating for me - where you get to that point in life where you realize that you start forgetting more than you knew v. remembering more than you have forgotten! :-)

Have run Memtest86 - RAM passes tests. Since it's DDR4 RAM, I used Passmark's Memtest86 (non plus) and it showed no errors after 4 passes.

I have 2 8GB sticks of RAM. I've run the system with a single stick of RAM installed, but no matter which stick I use the BSODs continue. All external devices apart from mouse/keyboard are disconnected - no other SSD or HDD attached. Latest dumps here - all different bugchecks again: https://stephenfoulds.com/Dumps2019-07-25.zip

I think this leaves the SSD as the last culprit, which is a right pain as it's a M.2 SSD and the slot is underneath the motherboard so I have to take the entire computer apart to get to it. My plan is to clone the drive to another old SSD I have lying around that I know works, remove my current SSD and see if the BSODs continue. The SSD is only 6 months old so still under warranty
