[SOLVED] SFCFix - THANK YOU

for so long my w7 x64 installation could not run sfc /scannow to completion. always stopping at 12% (ish).

today i came across SFCFix when looking in to an unrelated (i think) issue

1) ran sfc to get a fresh CBS.log
2) ran SFCfix.exe
3) it found and fixed some permissions issues in 23 seconds
4) re-ran SFC, it completed fully

In future, I would strongly recommend not doing this. It's a bad idea in many ways.

First and foremost, this was the cause of SFC getting stuck at 12%. You tampered with Windows's internal file store and messed up its file management and storage processes enough to break SFC.
Additionally, aside from the broken SFC, any level of tampering can be enough to break Windows Update. Usually this will only become apparent when Microsoft update these particular files, although if you're very (un)lucky, it could break immediately. In a way though, it breaking in a year's time is worse. What are the chances you'll remember this modification and link it to a Windows Update error code which has appeared out of the blue six, ten, twenty months down the line? You'll waste time trying all of the standard repairs, but none will work because they won't target store tampering.
Third, any incorrectly loosened permissions, if done incorrectly, can pose a security risk. Although I do not believe this to be the case here, modifying the store in the wrong way can open up your internal system files to attack/replacement/infection to every known piece of malware under the Sun. Again, I don't believe this to have happened here, but as a general rule tampering is a bad idea unless you really understand the security implications and how to do it correctly (it's another big reason we don't do it manually - SFCFix has been carefully coded to do the job properly, and we leave it all to the tool - prevents human error).
Finally, you didn't actually save *any* space at all - and even if you had done the deletions properly, a few tiny pictures are a completely insignificant amount of space and wouldn't have justified all the headaches you're having now trying to fix the damage.

Look at any of the "fix" lines in the log:

The file has been repaired from elsewhere on your computer. Huh? I'm not going to go into any level of depth whatsoever, but essentially winsxs only creates links to elsewhere on the system (or elsewhere on the system creates links to winsxs, depending on how you wish to look at it). Deleting either one deletes the link, deleting both deletes the file. So, by deleting only one half (irrespective of where you did that), the file is *still* on your system, *still* taking up space. So essentially the damaged store didn't even save you any space at all because the file's still on your system!

So, in future, please know that this is a bad idea :)

What we will do now is manually repair these files.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
Download SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
Save any open documents and close all open windows.
On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
SFCFix will now process the script.
Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC /SCANNOW

Right click on the

button
Click on Command prompt (Admin) => Press Yes on the prompt
Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command SFC /SCANNOW
Please wait for this to Finish before continuing with rest of the steps.

Convert CBS.log to CBS.txt

Right click on the

button
Click on Run => Inside the run box copy and paste the following command:

Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please upload CBS.txt to this thread
