Hi. I am running a PC with Windows 10. It will suddenly restart occasionally. There are no (known) malware or viruses. I have also run MalwareBytes AntiMalware, it returned 0 infections. I encountered "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.", while after running sfc /scannow.

I have followed all 6 steps in your directions. The SFCFix app crashes instantly after the first run. This is a copy of the log presented on exit:

SFCFix version 3.0.2.1 by niemiro.
Start time: 2019-08-20 19:06:54.435
Microsoft Windows 10 Build 18362 - amd64
Not using a script file.

SFCFix version 3.0.2.1 by niemiro has encountered an unhandled exception.
Currently storing 0 datablocks.
Finish time: 2019-08-20 19:07:01.152

I have attached the CBS.zip file as well.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Thanks for your reply. Is the issue that I have with SFC only that there's a bug with matching the Defender files?

The version I have for Windows Defender is:
Antimalware Client Version: 4.18.1907.4

I understand the issue was fixed in 4.18.1908. I can't see how to manually download that update. Windows Updates says I'm current. How do I update Windows Defender Client?

Thank you,

Tom

Thanks for the quick reply! I need to return this computer tomorrow morning. Will the update arrive before then? I'd like to confirm that everything is well before I return this machine.

Thanks again,

Tom

If you're able to tell that SFC will likely pass after the Defender update, then I should look elsewhere to see why this machine suddenly restarts randomly?

Yes, all should be well after the defender update. Although an additional DISM or SFC scan may be needed.

When does the machine restart? Are you receiving BSODs?

The machine restarts at random times. I think it may be when it's stressed, though I can't confirm because I wasn't the user it when it suddenly restarts. It's not getting any BSODs. Though, I just had to restore this machine to yesterday because during startup just before the login screen would appear, the screen stayed black indefinitely. Later, checking things, when I saw the failed SFC Scan, I stopped looking further. Now, if there's nothing wrong with Windows files, I should check other items.

There's a Samsung 860 EVO installed with plenty of free space so I'm not looking at the storage since SSDs are pretty reliable. I'll check the RAM and make sure everything's cooling adequately. If you have any other ideas, that would be great!

Thanks,

Tom

I tried the sfc /scannow one more time and I was surprised by:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. !!!
For online repairs, details are included in the CBS log file located at
windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline
repairs, details are included in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag.

I do have a spare PSU to test. I was going to do that last, but corrupted files have been repaired!? I wasn't expecting that without the Defender Update.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Looks good!

Also, when I cleaned out the dust, I realized I'd already replaced the PSU with an EVGA 400W. It's not an 80 PLUS unit, but it's not the cheap 275 Watt factory PSU either. I think I'll trust the current PSU.

Thanks for your help with everything. I'll keep that in mind about the Windows Defender update and the issues with sfc in case I encounter it again.
