sfc /scannow "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation

First off Hello I'm new on here nice to meet ya. Secondly I hope you can offer me some advice before I purposely blow up my desktop:banghead:

I'm running windows 7 32bit, I just now began noticing problems with my my computer when the windows update service kept displaying the same updates and never would search for new updates, so I ended up forcing it to search and I got the the dreaded 80073712 error code done some searching on the microsoft website tried their fix it stuff which normally does work, this time, nothing worked. so tried to run a sfc scan through command prompt as admin and I got the "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation before the scan even started.

I've downloaded and ran the checksur.exe program and made a copy of the cbslog and I have also made a copy of the components file to send ya'll. Please tell me you can help me out.

Here is the link to my Cbs.log https://www.dropbox.com/s/7j3yik6lsyup4g1/CbsPersist_20150119183942.log?dl=0

Here is the link to my components zipfile https://www.dropbox.com/s/bb0z0s4y70trskw/COMPONENTS?dl=0

I hope this is everything you need if not just let me know and I'll get you what you need.

Re: sfc /scannow "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operati

Hello Dustin and welcome to the forum.

Sorry to have to say this so soon, but this is not looking good already. The COMPONENTS hive is generally ~30mb, the hive you uploaded is only 256kb. This is a sign that something has gone very wrong, it looks like the whole file has gone missing.

Code:
COMPONENTS
9 hrs ago ยท 256 KB

Can you please go the following location C:\Windows\System32\config and look for the following files:
-COMPONENTS
-Any other files that start with the word COMPONENTS
-Or any files that have a similar name to COMPONENTS (it could be spelt different, have a number, a symbol etc)
If you find any please create a folder on your desktop and copy and paste all these files into this folder.
Next can you please zip this folder and upload them for me to analyze? The file may be too big to attach to this post, please use either Dropbox or One Drive.

  1. Click on the
    Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg
button. Inside the search box type in CMD
  2. Right click on CMD => Choose Run as Administrator
  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following commands
    dir %systemroot%\System32\config >1&&notepad 1
  4. Please post the contents of the notepad file back into this thread

Re: sfc /scannow "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operati

Well Hell that's not good at all. I guess what I am gonna tell you next will only make things much much worse. I just went in to the C:\Windows\System32\config and I looked for any other files marked components found none what so ever, then I had the bright idea to unhide all files in the folders options menu and boom screen is filled with component files.

Link to new zip file with all of the component files: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ekhw2c9stt3do09/Components.zip?dl=0

and here is the dir %systemroot%\System32\config >1&&notepad 1 that you asked for.

Re: sfc /scannow "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operati

Have you got any recent System restore points?

Re: sfc /scannow "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operati

The oldest restore point I have listed is 1/14/2015. What exactly did of that stuff I posted tell you?

Re: sfc /scannow "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operati

Just wondering if restore points wont help me and The System Update Readiness Tool for Windows didn't help me would using my windows 7 dvd to repair windows solve the problem? Also if I did something to cause this problem is there anyway to tell what was done so I can avoid doing it again lol?

Re: sfc /scannow "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operati

Tried system restore, unfortunately it didn't restore back far enough.

Re: sfc /scannow "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operati

The oldest restore point I have listed is 1/14/2015. What exactly did of that stuff I posted tell you?

It told me that the COMPONENTS hive is missing all together. I was sort of hoping it might of renamed itself, but it unfortunately not.

Just wondering if restore points wont help me and The System Update Readiness Tool for Windows didn't help me would using my windows 7 dvd to repair windows solve the problem? Also if I did something to cause this problem is there anyway to tell what was done so I can avoid doing it again lol?

When a file like this just goes missing, we have to check the state of the HDD to make sure this is not due to HDD failure.

What I recommend from here is to run some HDD diagnostics. Please follow the steps here for SeaTools HDD Diagnostics. Run a Long test and a Short test, then report back the results to this thread.

Warning:: This fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

Warning:: Before doing anything it is a good idea to back up any data/files that are important to you, in case your hard drive is dying. Please see Here

chkdsk /f scan

  1. Right click on the Start button and select Run as administrator
  2. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    chkdsk /f

  3. Reboot
  4. Download ListChkdskResult.exe (by SleepyDude) from Here
  5. Double click on it to run it. It will take a few seconds to scan, then it will open a Notepad window with the log. Copy and paste the contents of this into your next post please!

Tried system restore, unfortunately it didn't restore back far enough.

That is shame, we can see if this file exists inside the VSS back up from the 1/14/2015.

Shadow Explorer restore

  1. Click Here to download ShadowExplorer -> Save this file to your desktop
  2. Go to your Desktop -> right click on ShadowExplorer-0.9-portable.zip -> Select Extract All -> Tick the box "Show extracted files when complete" -> Extract
  3. Double click on ShadowExplorerPortable.exe -> Press Yes to the UAC.
  4. Along the top can you set the date to 1/14/2015? If yes please continue, if no let me know what dates are here.
  5. Follow through to the following path C:\Windows\System32\config
  6. Can you see the COMPONENTS hive?

Re: sfc /scannow "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operati

Alrighty I downloaded the SeaTools HDD Diagnostics program I ran the long test and the short test and to my surprise and joy it said my HDD passed both test without any errors now unfortunately I wasn't able to view or copy the log from the test mainly because I don't have a physical keyboard right now lol been using the On-Screen Keyboard.

I ran checkdisk scan like you said and then I downloaded ListChkdskResult.exe and ran it the results are listed below:

It will be a file just called COMPONENTS, here is an example from what it looks like on my PC.

Re: sfc /scannow "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operati

I'm sorry I haven't replied in quite sometime. I officially became fed up with my computer and basically re installed windows 7, Which fixed the problem for awhile but now for some damn reason its back to doing the same crap as it was before! :banghead::banghead::banghead: Windows Update error 80073712 and windows help is telling me to run The System Update Readiness Tool again! The first couple of updates after I reinstalled windows 7 worked just fine which leads me to believe that the problem isn't on my end but on Microsoft's end with a faulty update or some **** like that.

So before I download The System Update Readiness Tool I'm gonna go through all the ideas we discussed except for the hdd health and see what happens.

I will report back with any and all results I get.

Re: sfc /scannow "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operati

  2. Press Enter
  3. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please upload CBS.txt to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to you next post please upload via Dropbox or One Drive

Please download and run SFCFix from >Here<

It will take about 15 minutes to process. Once the scan has completed a notepad file will launch with the results. Please copy and paste the entire contents of the results and post them back into this thread. Please put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Re: sfc /scannow "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operati

I ran SFC /SCANNOW like you instructed and it did nothing but give me that message about not being able to run scan I took a screen shot of it for you.

Re: sfc /scannow "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operati

Here is the components file I have. I can already tell you its not good, there are several other files with the word components as part of the name but it would not let me ad them to a zip file kept saying the files I was trying to add contained nothing. I believe your gonna find that that this is not the whole file and that the whole file is missing with no trace.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ekhw2c9stt3do09/Components.zip?dl=0

Re: sfc /scannow "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operati

That is not good, it is way too small.

Are you using a certain image/backup image when you reinstalled 7?

Re: sfc /scannow "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operati

Just the original vista to Windows 7 home premium upgrade installation disk with service pack one. The exact same disc my mom used to upgrade from vista to windows 7 on her desktop and she hasn't had any update issues. It makes ya wonder if that is only big file missing but then again my computer is running damn good for being 9 years old running 7 and has all original parts lol except for my linksey ae255 ubs wireless n adapter

Very strange, it is likely other files are missing as well. Did you do a repair install or a fresh install?

Re: sfc /scannow "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operati

I did a fresh install
