Server 2016 unable to install cumulative updates with 0x80073701 - ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING

Hello everyone,

I have a physical dell server running server 2016 that I am unable to install any CU's, it's been several months now, I tried downloading the update from the MS catalog and installing directly but it still fails.

I was setting error 0x80073701 but in the cbs.log I was not seeing this line "[HRESULT = 0x80073701 - ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING]".

I read an article about uninstalling language packs which were the cause for the assembly missing so I ran "Lpksetup.exe" and uninstalled French, Spanish and Japanese. After a reboot is when I started seeing the errors for [HRESULT = 0x80073701 - ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING] in the cbs.log file.

I have ran sfc /scannow as well as all the dism commands that you find online. They show files have been repaired but no luck on the updates.

I am not sure what part of the cbs.log is needed to start troubleshooting but here's an excerpt

edit: I have blown out and recreated the softwaredistribution folder as well as the catroot folder. The server is configured to get updates from our WSUS server, I even changed it to grab updates from MS directly but no luck either.

and I found sfcfix and ran it, no issues found:

Hi!

Please do the following:

FRST Registry Search
1. Click your Start button and type in cmd.
2.After you find the Command Prompt, right click on it and select Run as Administrator.
3. Copy and paste the following into the Command Prompt:

reg load HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\COMPONENTS

4. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
5. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
6. Copy and paste KB4343887 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
7. When the scan is complete a notepad window will open with the results. Please attach this to your next reply. It is saved on your desktop named SearchReg.txt.

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download the attached fixlist.txt and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

it installed the update - rebooted and now searched for more updates and it found new ones!
