We have an old server running 2008 R2 that started acting up (errors trying to launch file explorer, unresponsive on the network, etc...) and when the tech rebooted it, it would only boot to the system recovery. It failed all of the automated recovery options so we attempted to boot the server from a Server 2008 R2 setup DVD and performed the following attempts to recover:
bootrec /FixMBR
(The operation completed successfully)
bootrec /FixBoot
(The operation completed successfully)
bootrec /RebuildBCD
...Total identified Windows installations:0
The operation completed successfully.
We then had them try to run the following based on another suggested fix:
X:\Sources>dism /image:c:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions (tried without the last flag as well and received the same error)
Apologies, I'm only able to get screenshots of the log output but the message displayed was:
Error: 3
An error occurred while attempting to start the servicing process for the image located at c:\.
