Just found an interesting report regarding Samsung 840 (non Pro) and Samsung 840 EVO SSD's. There are many threads on the internet regarding a degradation in speed when reading data that has not been read or modified for a period of time. It also seems to be affected by temperature.

The issue only affects the non pro 840 and the EVO drives, since they use TLC flash.

The full article is available here and worth a read. I have found PCPer's Allyn Malventano knowledgeable about SSD's and storage, so I trust his findings. Plus his report is backed up by many forum threads online. Samsung 840 / 840 EVO susceptible to flash read speed degradation over time | PC Perspective

A discussion about that report:

Samsung has acknowledged the issue and will be pushing out a firmware fix.

Just thought I'd post it here for discussion.

Thank you very much for this Stephen. I've actually got an 840EVO so it directly applies to me. I'll read it in full later tonight.

Hmmm - glad I got the non-TLC Pro version. Thanks Stephen.

I find it odd this problem ONLY occurs with files that have not been written to in 4+ weeks - even if the drive has been sitting on a shelf. It seems like there is an easy fix by forcing a defrag on the whole drive (which does slightly affect wear limits, being TLC devices), or by copying affected folders to a temp folder, then back over to the original folder. Or just wait until Samsung releases a fix. Because there has been no reported read or write errors, or data loss, I am inclined to recommend users just wait until the firmware fix comes out. After all, these only affect files the users have not accessed in a long time - so do they really need to restore full-speed access right now?
