Hi guys, wondering if you can help me. I've had this computer for 3 months and it has been generating two different types of bsods, typically on hibernation or shut down, leading to extremely long restart times, and more dangerously, loss of data when putting into hibernation

I have already run driver verifier, and have really expended all efforts trying to find a solution without having to write a post, I don't enjoy adding to the clutter :)

My laptop is an ASUS n550JV, win 8.1 x64, i7-4700hq @ 2.4Ghz, 8 GB ram, nvidia gt 750m and intel hd graphics 4600. windows 8 came as factory and I updated to 8.1

I wasn't able to run the perfmon report, as it gave me the error message "The operator or administrator has refused the request". I am running with admin privilages. Attached is the requested dump info in zip format.

Many thanks.

Is there a particular reason that you're not using UEFI and Secure Boot?

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).
Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration): New link (15 Aug 2012): DuplexSecure - Downloads (pick the appropriate version for your system and select "Un-install" when you run it).
Alternate link: Disk-Tools.com
Manual procedure here: Registry and SPTD problems | DAEMON Pro Help

Some of the verifier enabled memory dumps blame RTKVHD64.sys - a driver for your Realtek Audio.
I have to wonder about this, as the other memory dumps (to include other verifier enabled dumps) are hinting at a networking issue (although some of the errors are also related to power-down functions).
But, just-in-case, please update that driver from this link: Realtek
FWIW, low-level problems (such as Daemon Tools) can obscure the actual cause - so let's see what happens after removing Daemon Tools and the sptd.sys driver (if installed).

I'd also suggest updating your networking drivers (both wired and wireless) to the latest, Win8.1 compatible version.
This includes the drivers that your VPN software uses (I saw at least 2 different VPN programs on the system) - so you may have to update your VPN software also.

Just in case - ensure that Driver Verifier is turned off - otherwise the system may continue to BSOD on you.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Only update this one - DO NOT REMOVE:
ASMMAP64.sys Thu Jul 2 05:13:26 2009 (4A4C7A36)
LENOVO ATK Hotkey ATK0101 ACPI UTILITY (also found in Asus systems)
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=ASMMAP64.sys

If unable to update this one, it's safe to remove:
NMgamingms.sys Fri Jul 24 04:55:08 2009 (4A6976EC)
Primax/ Dell USB Optical Mouse driver (CHECK OEM - system manufacturer)
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=NMgamingms.sys

Only update this one - DO NOT REMOVE:
atkwmiacpi64.sys Tue Sep 6 21:44:52 2011 (4E66CC94)
ATK WMIACPI Utility
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=atkwmiacpi64.sys

If unable to update this one, it's safe to remove:
AiCharger.sys Thu Sep 22 22:04:40 2011 (4E7BE938)
Asus Charger Driver
Likely BSOD cause - haven't seen recently (15Jan2013)
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=AiCharger.sys

If unable to update this one, it's safe to remove:
tap0901.sys Thu Nov 24 13:50:27 2011 (4ECE91F3)
TAP-Win32 Adapter V9 or
OpenVPN driver or COMODO
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=tap0901.sys

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web. Removing some drivers may make the system unstable - so if you're unable to find updates, post back for info on the one's that can/cannot be safely removed.

Hi usasma, thanks a lot for your help.

Firstly, the drivers you highlighted in red:

ASMMAP64.sys - Downloaded update from asus website n550jv page (2013.07.11 update, Version V1.0.0030)

NMgamingms.sys - I tried to uninstall as I couldn’t find an update. However, the only program in programs and features that refers to a mouse is “Windows Driver Package – ASUS (ATP) Mouse (09/17/2013 1.0.0.186)”, given the date it is unlikely to be linked to the driver in question.

Atkwmiacpi64.sys – couldn’t find an update.
AiCharger.sys – couldn’t uninstall, the only charger utility present in programs and features is ASUS USB charger plus

Tao0901.sys – updated from 9.9.2 to 9.9.2_3.

I have updated the realtek audio drivers to the latest version using the link you provided me.

With regards to Daemon Tools, I have never had sptd installed, but nevertheless I uninstalled the program for the meantime, please advise me if it is ok to reinstall.
I looked for updates on the asus drivers page for my laptop, and my networking drivers were up to date. For the VPN programs, they were already updated to the latest versions. I am in China, so these are pretty fundamental to my day-to-day web surfing.

By the way, since we last spoke I have also updated my nvidia card to the latest geforce driver (335.23)

Let me know where to go from here.

Thanks!

If you wish to reinstall Daemon Tools, please wait until we're sure that the BSOD's have stopped.
Daemon Tools has been the biggest problem in the BSOD community for many years.

The only other thing to update is the network drivers - to include the VPN programs with their network drivers.

Beyond that, now we wait to see if the BSOD's have stopped..............

Hi usasma,

Could you help me out with updating the network drivers if I already have the latest drivers on the ASUS support page?

Also, today was the first time I had a mid-session bsod. I was watching youtube and then the screen froze with the audio skipping.

I am attaching the summary from bluescreen viewer (ntoskrnl.exe+ 171f7c) and the dmp file

Thanks

To install the latest network drivers there are a couple of options:
- download the drivers from the website of the manufacturer that made the chipset for that particular network device (usually more updated than the one's from the PC Manufacturer)
- download the driver from the PC Manufacturer's website (Asus) (they sometimes contain customized stuff that you may need/rely upon).

Then uninstall the currently installed network device drivers using Control Panel...Programs and Features...Uninstall a Program
If not there, then go into Device Manager, right click on the network device and select "Uninstall" (and check the box to remove driver software if presented with that choice).

These are the network devices showing on your system (from the systeminfo.txt file):
Network Card(s): 4 NIC(s) Installed.

This memory dump blames your wireless driver - athwbx.sys (Thu Aug 15 23:13:28 2013 (520D98D8)) - yours appear to be Version: 10.0.0.268
As it dates from before the release of Win8.1 - I have to wonder if it's compatible w/Win8.1?

Although I do not suggest drivers from sites other than the manufacturer, it appears that this may be the exception to my rule.
Try the drivers from this link: Drivers for Atheros AR9485WB and Windows 8
Be sure to scan with an antivirus before opening any file that you download from the internet
I suspect that this will have to be extracted, then you'll have to install it through Device Manager (right click and select Update Driver - then point it at the extracted copy).
These drivers are dated from 13 Nov 2013 @ 09:00am (Version: 10.0.0.274)

Hi usasma,

I updated the wirless driver using the link that you gave me. I also updated the Ethernet driver to the latest version (2014), and I had already updated the Tap 32 driver following your previous instructions.

With regards to the astrill vpn driver, I already have the latest software package from their website (02.2014), so I can't update that driver further.

Could you please advise what I should do with the following drivers as I either can't find an update or can't uninstall from the app wizard: ASMMAP64.sys, NMgamingms.sys, Atkwmiacpi64.sys, AiCharger.sys

fI have also experienced a further two BSODs since the last time I posted, one caused by ACPI.sys+ 50800, and one by ntoskrnl.exe+ 1f71a6. I am attaching the summary file and .dmp file as before.

Many thanks

And another ntoskrnl.exe+ 1f71a6 cause by the computer going into sleep mode. Ill stop posting more until I hear back from you.

Many thanks

I'm late for work.
I'll run the dump file this afternoon

In the meantime, please remove the network connection from the VPN software (temporarily, for testing purposes) and see if that stops the problem.

Don't worry about those other drivers for now. We may have to address them later (particularly the mouse driver), but for now let's just see what's going on with the system.

Also, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings
It'll likely cause the system to BSOD - but we hope that it will point out the faulting drivers

It looks like Driver Verifier will be our best bet for nailing this down.

The last 3 memory dumps were STOP 0x9F's, but they didn't blame a particular driver.
Most often these sort of errors are caused by:
- chipset drivers
- network drivers
- storage drivers
- video drivers
Please note that in each of the memory dumps, the debugger can't find symbols for files starting in RAS....
These are Windows networking files - so we tend to suspect networking as a cause.
Also, please note that the asvpndrv.sys driver is a part of the Astril VPN software and is present in the memory dumps.

You may also want to update all the Intel programs associated with your system (TurboBoost, Management Engine, etc)
Finally, sometimes the USB/USB3.0 drivers, bluetooth, and audio drivers may contribute to this.

So, please update those drivers to the latest, Win8.1 compatible versions while we're waiting for Driver Verifier to tell us something.

Hi Usasma,

I went to the intel site and used the automatic detection utility to upgrade drivers.

I attempted to updated graphics from (10.18.10.3308 to 10.18.10.3496), but unable to install (“the driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer manufacturer”)

Chipset was already latest version.

That was all I could do from the Intel website.

I’m receiving a new bsod, which occurs when I remove and then re-insert the usb dongle for my wireless mouse. The message that comes up is KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE. I am attaching the latest error dump for you to see.

After uninstalling the Astrill program completely, it seems that resuming from hibernation is slightly more stable, but I am still getting BSODs at times.

With regards to the driver verifier, I ran it before I posted this thread and it has thrown up the same errors as without.

Where shall we go from here?

While I appreciate that the memory dumps with and without verifier may have been the same - I'd prefer to see the verifier memory dumps myself.
There are clues in each memory dump that may not be fully evident.

This memory dump specifically blames NMgamingms.sys - and it's dated from 2009 (likely not compatible w/Win8.1)
Uninstall the software/drivers for the wireless mouse.
Then physically remove the wireless mouse receiver (if possible) from the system.
Use a wired mouse for testing to see if that stops the BSOD's

If you want to continue to use the wireless mouse (after the testing), please ensure that you download the latest, Win8.1 compatible drivers for it.
if there aren't any compatible drivers, then it's probably going to mean that you need a new, compatible mouse.

If the BSOD's continue, then try Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings
