I noticed that updates were being downloaded in my update history but they were not listed in installed updates, I tried the following based on this website: How to Fix: Windows Update Won't Update | www.infopackets.com.

Step 1: Run CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Step 2: Use The System File Checker (and DISM)
Step 3: Run the System Readiness Tool
Step 4: Use the Windows Update Diagnostics Hotfix
Step 5: Use the Windows Update Troubleshooter (Win7)
Step 6: Reset the SoftwareDistribution Directory

This did not fix the problem, but I noticed that when I ran the Windows Update Diagnostics Hotfix it detected error 0x80070057 and said it was not fixed. The current status of my issue is that when I check for updates it says to reboot to install updates. When I reboot it does not try to install updates and the update history is empty. I ran SFCFix.exe and the log is pasted below. I have attached the CBS folder. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the help. I ran the commands above. The delete statements did not find any files. I navigated to the folders to make sure the files were not there. I rebooted and confirmed that I am still experiencing the behavior I mention above. I check for updates. It tells me to reboot to install updates and as it boots up it does not try to install updates and no updates are in the update history and no new updates are in installed updates.

Let's check the health of your disk.

JcJ91sx.png
GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:

  • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the content of the GSmartControl .zip archive and execute gsmartcontrol.exe; To extract you can right-click your mouse on the GSmartControl.zip file and select Extract.
  • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
  • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, copy and paste their name in your next reply (or take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply);

GSmart aborted. In the attached zip file I have screen shots of the error received when aborting and the execution log with the command that the error occurred. It also contains the complete execution log and the output file. When I closed the pop-up boxes the attributes tab cleared out so I did not get a clear shot of the attributes tab. I started GSmart again this morning in order to get the complete attributes tab. Thanks for the help.

From the output it appears that there are reallocated sectors.

Please back up any important data before continuing.

Go here to download Seatools for Windows: How to use SeaTools for Windows
Once Seatools has been installed and run, choose Basic Tests->Fix All-> Fix All Long

This test may take several hours (about 3 hrs per TB).

Let me know if Seatools finds any bad blocks and if it successfully corrects them or if it fails.

It looks like Seatools ran successfully without finding any bad sectors, or at least I did not see any messages to that effect. It is still open if there is somewhere else I should check for whether or not it found bad sectorsI have attached a print screen of its final status and a copy of the log file. Before Seatools the 2nd run of Gsmart ran and I have also included the attributes, log, and status from that run. Thanks again.

Very good.

Let's run chkdsk. Again, make sure you have a good current backup.

chkdsk /f

After the commands complete, restart your computer and then wait at least 10 minutes.

Open Windows Update and attempt to check for updates.
Let me know the result.

I get the attached message when I check for updates. When I reboot nothing updates and I get the same message when I check for updates again.

Please restart the computer, then open Programs and Features, then choose Turn Windows Features on or Off.

Once the list of Windows features are displayed, zip and attach CBS.log with your reply.

We're still encountering problems with the transactional files.

Let's try this:

  • Press F8 while your computer is booting to display the Advanced Boot Options menu. Use the arrow keys to highlight Repair Your Computer, and press Enter.

  • Select a keyboard input method and click Next. A logon dialog box appears, as you can see in the following figure:

  • Select the name of an administrator account—enter its password (if any), and click OK.

  • At the System Recovery Options menu, choose Command Prompt

  • At the command prompt window, type the following and then press enter:

    bcdedit | find "osdevice"

    Note the drive letter that is returned, then change to that drive.

    CD C:\

    Next, change directories to Windows\System32\Config\

    CD Windows\System32\Config\

    Then, rename the TxR folder to TxR.old

    ren TxR TxR.old

    Finally, create a new TxR folder.

    mkdir TxR
  • When this completes, close the command console window and then click Restart at the advanced recovery options window.

Please run the following commands in an elevated command window:

attrib -r -s -h %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\TxR\*

dir %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\TxR\* > %UserProfile%\Desktop\DirectoryListing.txt

notepad %UserProfile%\Desktop\DirectoryListing.txt

The last command will cause Notepad to open with the list of all files in the directory. Please copy and paste this information into your reply.

Interesting. I'd like to take a look at the components hive.

Please manually upload the components hive by following these instructions:

Upload Components Hive
  1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  2. Right-click on the current COMPONENTS file and select copy
    Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  3. Right-click on your Desktop and select paste
  4. Right-click on the COMPONENTS file on your Desktop and select Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder
  5. Upload the zip from your Desktop to a file sharing service such as DropBox, OneDrive, SendSpace, etc. and include the link with your reply.
