Laptop make and model: Dell Inspiron 7520
OS is Windows 7 Home Pre 64bit Dell OEM
Age is around 2 years
CPU i7-3612QM
Video card is Intel HD graphics which reverts to AMD Radeon HD 7700M on gaming discreetly.

I suspect its the hard drive dieing as copying files is very very slow, the system is very slow after a reboot and takes ages to get going...

ive tried my best to get the needed infomation doing perfmon /report gives me a window saying...

Hi -

Remove Elby and Daemon Tools for now.

No sign in the dumps of HDD issue (like I/O error). Run HDD diags -

SeaTools for DOS, LONG test - https://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutorials/4072-hard-drive-hdd-diagnostics.html

If that passes, run Driver Verifier - https://www.sysnative.com/forums/bs...elated-windows-8-1-8-7-and-windows-vista.html

We're hoping Driver Verifier will flag a 3rd party driver.

Regards. . .

John

Hi

Elby would be clone to dvd right? just uninstalled that. Daemon Tools is gone. Ive got sea tools for windows installed it failed on tests like smart last time i tried, which was a few days ago but this time that passed, will the dos version give more accurate results with the tests?

Hi,

will the dos version give more accurate results with the tests?

Yes. DOS Seatools is in its own environment outside of the OS, and it's the version I always recommend. If you're running in Windows, there's room for a lot of false positives due to drivers possibly conflicting, antiviruses, etc.

Regards,

Patrick

The dos version does not detected any controllers or hard drives which is weird the hard drive is a seagate!

This happens frequently if a specific drive does not have proper SATA drivers. Can you please attempt to temporarily change from AHCI to IDE via the BIOS, and try Seatools DOS again?

Regards,

Patrick

Yep that got it detected is it normal for the system to look as though its crashed after clicking long test? the time in the corner stops and everything and i dont hear any noises come from the laptop.

Good work, and thanks for the information.

If you're crashing after initiating a Seatools test, even if it's not errors, but a crash, it's a faulty HDD.

Regards,

Patrick

Yea its a good job i slowly started backing up stuff months ago when i seen the sings, this will be my 3rd drive killed in the space of 3 years its not my luck when it comes to drives any specific manufacture i should stay clear from in the future? seagates the 1st on this list.

I pretty much strictly purchase Western Digital drives now that Seagate purchased the F3 Samsung drives not too far back (what I used to swear by).

There's nothing really wrong with Seagate drives and they get quite a lot of flak for no reason, however, it's their customer service that's the actual problem (IMO).

Regards,

Patrick

Would the cause of windows update hanging on 0% saying downloading also be caused by a dieing hard drive? its what i get every time i try downloadng updates also some windows installer installers hang to. ugh

Yep, definitely.

I hope you don't mind that I've marked it as solved since we've determined a faulty drive. If you'd like, I can reverse that until we're sure : )

Regards,

Patrick
