I have a Win 7 x64 Ultimate machine that still runs Windows Media Center in a dedicated home theater setup.
It's been running great for years, is integrated into a home automation system and there has been no need to move onto something else for the time being.
It plays files via mapped network drives from a NAS or another machine on my network.

Over the past few months, I've been getting random 6008 restarts. The first time this happened, I got a BSOD and a DMP file, but neither since.
The PC is set to NOT automatically restart on system failure and there is nothing else in the Event Log to indicate a potential problem.
It only seems to happen when WMC is running and also only in the early morning hours, which leads me to believe there is some WMC task that runs.
Since most if not all streaming/TV services for WMC have been discontinued, I've disabled any scheduled WMC/MCE tasks I could find.
I let the machine run for 2 days without WMC running and it never crashed.
With WMC left running overnight, I will consistently get at least 2 or more 6008s during this period.
There are also times I will be in the middle of watching something and the PC will literally just restart.
Again, no warning, no error, no BSOD and no DMP files.
Have tried both Kernel and Small Memory Dump options, but neither ever gets created.
Page File is fixed to 8GB (amount of physical RAM in this machine) on the C drive.

I then discovered this: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...n-you-try-to-access-a-shared-network-resource
The one dump that already existed on the machine from earlier in the year referenced Rdbss.sys with error 0x00000027.
This seemed like a good place to start. I located a download for this Hotfix (no longer hosted on the Windows site) here:
Windows6.1-KB2584874-x64.msu -> Language Neutral Windows 7 Hotfix Downloads -> Language Neutral Hotfix Downloads -> Downloads

If I attempt to install, I get "not applicable to your computer".
I'd like to know if there is another update that is interfering, if it's rolled into one that's already installed on my machine, or if there are some registry settings I can check in lieu of the hotfix, etc.

I could of course start uninstalling Windows Updates as far back as approximately when the problem started happening (as it could very well be something with an update), but I would really like to give this a go first.

Already cleaned out the case, cleaned slots, re-seated/tested RAM, etc. PSU tests OK.
Only things I haven't done are remove the CPU and apply fresh thermal grease or change out the SSD.
Otherwise, no hardware changes whatsoever.

Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated!

Hi softwaremaniac and thanks for the reply! Hope all is well.

Since the hotfix is not an option then, other than swapping CPU/SSD, can you think of anything else to try first?

SFC says no issues.

CHKDSK says no issues.

Recent pertinent errors from Event Log (still no BSOD or DMP files created):

The machine is set to start WMC on startup. As long as it is not running, everything is fine.
I'm definitely leaning towards something in a recent Windows Update, as Win7 is approaching EOL and WMC is dead.
Might be time to move to Kodi or similar.

Just frustrating that I'm not getting any debug info!

No I have not - simply checked the voltages as reported in the BIOS and then via HWiNFO64.

Just weird it keeps happening in the early mornings as if it's a result of a scheduled task.

PC is on an APC UPS. Going to plug it straight into the wall tonight and see if that affects anything, although I'm still leaning towards a Windows/WMC issue at this point.
Next time I have a chance, will reseat the CPU. Maybe I'll replace the PSU and SSD too, or try an in-place upgrade before I completely give up.

Basically throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks at this point.

So I took the PC off of the UPS, no change.
I was going to try an in-place upgrade/repair install, followed by trying a different PSU, re-seating the CPU with fresh thermal grease and then a new SSD in that order.
However, right as I went to insert the Windows DVD, another reboot occurred.
Since I was looking right at the PC when it happened this time, I noticed that the front panel power LED actually went out for a moment before it restarted, which seemed odd.
I also heard a faint but noticeable high-pitched whine from the PSU during startup.
This brought me back to your suggestion about starting with a PSU swap.
This PC is in an Apex mini-ITX case, which came with a 250w Allied PSU.
The case is still manufactured and an updated replacement power supply is available, so I ordered one.
The PSU arrived on Tuesday and I swapped it that night. While I had things apart, I re-seated the CPU with fresh thermal grease as well.
Everything powered up fine. CPU temps were about the same, but not one reboot since, so I would consider this solved.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction and saving me time!
