OS - Windows Vista Starter 32 bit

I have noticed that - Either Windows Update works or System Restore works. Both cannot work on my computer.

When I repair Windows Update via WSUS offline, it works OK. But then System Restore won't work.

System Restore gives error - 0x8000FFFF.

I do sfc /scannow only to find that a particular file pertaining to system restore is corrupt. Hence the problem.

The file is -

AutoAnalysis::
CORRUPT: C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-com-dtc-runtime_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.18000_none_195302e56002fb82\MSDTC.LOG

Please see the details in sfc fix log file as below -

Sorry for the delay. Are you still in need of assistance?

Re: MSDTC.LOG - sfcfix found it corrupt & cannot repair - Win Vista Starter 32 bit

Well...well.... you can do something.......although I ran an sfcfix.zip copied from another thread. Then do sfcfix - no errors. But if I do a re-run of sfc, same error appears....again same fix? You may assist...please.

Re: MSDTC.LOG - sfcfix found it corrupt & cannot repair - Win Vista Starter 32 bit

Please start with the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Yes Sir....Thanks for the exclusive repair/ fix.....

Sfcfix was successful. Thanks. Bindesh.

Re: MSDTC.LOG - sfcfix found it corrupt & cannot repair - Win Vista Starter 32 bit

After repairs via sfcfix and zip file, run sfc --cmd prompt as under --

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6002]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

When run sfcfix, the results are --

SFCFix version 3.0.0.0 by niemiro.
Start time: 2016-12-01 22:38:38.477
Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 2 - x86
Not using a script file.

AutoAnalysis::
SUMMARY: No corruptions were detected.
AutoAnalysis:: directive completed successfully.

SFCFix version 3.0.0.0 by niemiro has completed.
Currently storing 3 datablocks.

----------------------EOF-----------------------

The question is - Then why did sfc /scannow end up with result --
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.-- when there were no corruptions?

Something wrong with sfc tool in MS?

Re: MSDTC.LOG - sfcfix found it corrupt & cannot repair - Win Vista Starter 32 bit

We weren't done yet. Please do the following.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Re: MSDTC.LOG - sfcfix found it corrupt & cannot repair - Win Vista Starter 32 bit

Dear BrianDrab,

Something very strange has happened. While checking for Windows Defender not working - error - 8000106ba - The solution is sfc /scannow - I did it. It repaired the Win Defender but our old problem of MSDTC>LOG re-appeared. Now that I had got it fixed properly through the script and all that....what went wrong again. This is the same situation as I had done with copy - Paste sfcFix.... That means something else is wrong ... If I remember correctly, somewhere I had read on the net that MSDTC.LOG location was changed subsequently after SP1 or SP2 via an update but the Protected file folder still maintains the location at some old position...hence, when sfc /scannow done ...it shows file is missing. Either the error is to be ignored or what to do ? Because the error is recurring.... (If possible I will search for that MSDTC.LOG position change article again on net and forward it to you)....So MS has done some changes and forgotten to set it right in the protected folder as well.... What a mess!!!

Please see the attached CBS .log and sfcfix log .

Thanks.

Re: MSDTC.LOG - sfcfix found it corrupt & cannot repair - Win Vista Starter 32 bit

Go ahead and repeat the steps in Post#5.

Let's see if the issue stays away this time.

Re: MSDTC.LOG - sfcfix found it corrupt & cannot repair - Win Vista Starter 32 bit

Dear BrianDrab,

You are right....

I did as instructed.....

1- Used SFCFIX from Step 5.
The results are as in attached file - SFCFix Step 5 Repeat.txt
MSDTC.LOG file was repaired.

2- Run SFCFix (without any script) to check if repairs are done.
The results are in SFCFixSimple1.txt (File attached)
No corruptions found. Nothing to repair.

3- Run Admin CMD sfc /scannow to see if sfc is causing the error to recur.
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
The results are in sfc scannow result.txt and cbslog-Final.txt (both files attached)

The problem is solved.

But the question is - why / how did it recur in the first place? What could have gone wrong in last few days....may be a cleaner deleted MSDTC.LOG file?Is this file not a protected file?Anyway I am still searching for the article on internet that said something about the changed location of this file via an update and the resulting mis-match in the protected file details and the new / old location of the said file....The script solution that you have given me must be from a good PC with proper OS -- Copy - Paste, I suppose....
So whether mis-match or no mis-match if it is running properly on your PC then it must be OK to copy -paste on my PC...This is how sfcFix corrects the errors that cannot be repaired otherwise.....

So all is well that ends well.

Thanks.

Unfortunately I don't have an answer for this. Let's see if this issues happens again. Hopefully not.

Re: MSDTC.LOG - sfcfix found it corrupt & cannot repair - Win Vista Starter 32 bit

Dear BrianDrab,

Lets hope it does not recur. But I came across something I thought I must put it in reply -- (The following is copy-paste from internet) --

Causes of MSDTC.LOG Errors
MSDTC.LOG problems can be attributed to corrupt or missing files, invalid registry entries associated with MSDTC.LOG, or a virus / malware infection.
More specifically, these MSDTC.LOG errors can be caused by:

  • Corrupt Windows registry keys associated with MSDTC.LOG / Microsoft Windows.
  • Virus or malware infection that has corrupted the MSDTC.LOG file or related Microsoft Windows program files.
  • Another program maliciously or mistakenly deleted MSDTC.LOG-related files.
  • Another program is in conflict with Microsoft Windows and its shared referenced files.
  • Corrupt download or incomplete installation of Microsoft Windows software.

Now we have got the lead --- Before the error recurs, I intend to do some R&D (Research & Destruction)...it will take time and lot of study....Hold-on to your seat bealts.....here we go!!!
