Unfortunately, anything risky isn't worth the benefit as the machine generally "just works fine every day".
While it bugs me to have something wonky like this going on, I may just need to live with it.
I had run the SSD tools, but no problems were found (image below). One thing I didn't mention previously
is that SFC had some issues:
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
Again, given the "works every day" nature of this older machine, I don't think I want to hunt down the
SFC issues unless you suspect they may have some relevance to the MSCONFIG problems.
