The last few days, after having computer on for 5 hours or so, the screen goes blank and shuts down.
When I restart it the screen resolution is way lower than it should be at 1920x1200 for a 24" screen.
The display is almost like it is in safe mode but wasn't boot up that way nor show safe mode.
I go into change resolution and it shows 800x? a very low resolution and that box is grey and won't allow me to change it to 1920x1200.

Is this a sign of the card going bad or is there a quick fix for this problem?

If I turn it off for an hour or two it will boot up with the correct resolution. No it is not set for hibernating.
Any and all help appreciated.

What are the Specs of the PC/laptop?

Check the temps and voltages using Hardware Monitor> D/L and run Hardware Monitor do something intense like a virus scan or gaming for a bit, Alt+Tab back to HWM expand all the trees and use the Win7 snipping tool to grab a screen shot of the HWM window, post the screen shot using the paperclip button in the advanced message box(Go Advanced button).

I would swap in a different monitor (most newer TVs have computer inputs) and see what happens. If okay, you know the problem is with your monitor. If the same problem, you know it is with your computer.

This could be heat problem since you say it happens after running the computer for hours, and works again after being shut off for hours. So make sure the interior is clean of heat trapping dust and all fans spin properly. A failing power supply could also cause this (but so could a PSU full of heat trapping dust).

Problem solved.
Went into Device Manager and found Code 43 in the display.
Uninstalled driver/rebooted/went to Nvidia and downloaded and installed it/rebooted and display worked properly.
Checked DM again and the yield sign is gone and resolutions are correct.

The temps were all good from the get go and it had just been cleaned with fans spinning properly.

The desktop is over 8+ years old so may be looking for retirement or social security.

Thanks all for chiming in.
