Hi, im new to this forum and really struggling with my Vista laptop. User account log on screen starts fine and which every user i chose there is a blank pale blue screen (apparently known as black screen of death - KSOD)

Acer Aspire 5536 - Vista Home 32bit SP2

Troubleshooted with:
- Safe mode
- command prompt
- repair cd
- can’t restore

[FONT=verdana, helvetica, sans-serif]To regain the desktop i can run Task manager \ explorer but this has a black background with icons that dont /wont do anything (other forums just leave me with this as a fix [/FONT]:shame2:[FONT=verdana, helvetica, sans-serif])[/FONT]

I have Ran sfc - Produced CBS.log - Opened with difficulty - Tried to decipher [SF] sections now im stumped.

I will post log later as it is on another usb drive. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

There's not a lot we can do without the log files :)
Some system details would be a good idea as well.

Sorry for the delay and thanks for the replies. Any ideas how i can attach the log file as it it too large (content not size). I have pasted the [SR] section which im not sure exactly what it is but apparently it's descriptive in my issue.

Hope these will do.

I Have tried running Malware and virus scans from my usb but they wont run. I will attempt the other suggestions. Thanks

There's something VERY wrong with the machine if that's all the [SR] results from an SFC scan - there should be about 120 times as much for an x64 install.

You can upload the file to your favourite fileshare site (SkyDrive, DropBox, etc.), and post a link.

Here's what may be breaking SFC ....
Code:
2013-01-28 23:31:42, Error                 CSI    [EMAIL="000001b4@2013/1/28:23:31:42.320"]000001b4@2013/1/28:23:31:42.320[/EMAIL] (F) d:\longhorn\base\wcp\componentstore\csd_core.cpp(591): Error STATUS_SXS_ASSEMBLY_NOT_FOUND originated in function CCSDirect::GetDeploymentClosureStatus expression: (null)

There are 183 instances of that error set present in your log file (3-5 per boot).
It appears to be blocking proper function of the SFC command - it will probably also block many other things.

You can try running the CheckSUR tool. but I would be surprised if it completes properly.....

Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008
(you'll need to look in the details for Vista, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder so I can take a look - post a link in your reply.

Downloaded file and copied it from another machine. It starts to run then encounters an error: 0x8007000d. The data is invalid.

Any ideas?

that sounds like it could be a checksum error - a corrupt file.

Usasma may have more to say.

Have you looked at and/or run the hardware diagnostics he was talking about?

I'll have to create the bootable CDs tomorrow and run them. I'll post outcome.

Once again thanks for all your help guys.

I'm just shooting in the dark here :0) At work we knock the diagnostics out first - that way we're not trying to fix problems caused by broken hardware.

Please provide this information so we can provide a complete analysis (even though you're not reporting BSOD's): https://www.sysnative.com/forums/bs...d-posting-instructions-windows-8-7-vista.html

Also, please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

Im at work now but I have tried investigating EV before which gave a snap in error (i think). Basically couldn't do anything with it.

Probably should have mentioned this before but this was the initially problem which occurred once (BSOD)

http://sdrv.ms/16rztMi

Can't actually remember what I done to get past this but probably just the repair function from the Vista CD but may provide more info for you.

I have the bootable CDs now so will try them later this evening.

Sorry for the late reply but I have just restored it off an image i created a few months ago. Seems like the best solution. Cheers for the help though. I hate vista!!

No problem - at least you're back up and running :)

Good luck with it - Vista with SP2 is actually a reasonably good OS, and not the dog that the RTM was.
