Hello. I've been fighting with a Server 2019 that was patching fine up through this most recent June 2024 cumulative patch, KB5039217. Any attempt I've made to apply it has returned a 0x800f0986 - PSFX_E_APPLY_FORWARD_DELTA_FAILED error code. sfc /scannow and dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth both come back with no errors found. sfcfix doesn't identify any problems either. Review of the CBS.log file shows problems with some of the checksums and one of the packages (2024-06-18 13:26:53 is the timestamp of the run for the attached log file), but I'm stumped on where to take this next.

Hi,

Upload your COMPONENTS hive.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Hello, Maxstar. Attached is the requested components file.

Thank you for taking the time to look at this. It is appreciated.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Afterwards reboot the server and attempt to update again. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs.

SFCFix script was run, no problems with the fix script from the attached log file. Took a bit to idle out the services and get a window of opportunity to reboot the server. Attempted to install the KB5039217 and it threw a new error this time: 0x8007371b - ERROR_SXS_TRANSACTION_CLOSURE_INCOMPLETE and then attempted an automatic corruption repair. Updated CBS log attached.

Worked like a champ! Successful installation of the patch! It'll be a few days before I can get another window to idle out the services and perform a reboot to finalize the patch application, but I'd say this can be marked solved at this point. Thank you for the assistance in getting this cleaned up.

You're welcome and glad to hear the update is installed with an pending reboot.

I will mark this thread as solved, but you can always reply to this thread if there are any other issues after the reboot.. (y)
