Intel recently announced that it has completed software validations and has started to release new microcode for current CPU platforms in reaction to the following threats:
  • CVE-2019-11091 – Microarchitectural Data Sampling Uncacheable Memory (MDSUM)
  • CVE-2018-12126 – Microarchitectural Store Buffer Data Sampling (MSBDS)?
  • CVE-2018-12127 – Microarchitectural Load Port Data Sampling (MLPDS)
  • CVE-2018-12130 – Microarchitectural Fill Buffer Data Sampling (MFBDS)
This new release includes a microcode update from Intel for the following CPUs.

This update is a standalone update that is targeted at Windows 10, version 1903 and Windows Server 2019, version 1903. This update also includes Intel microcode updates that were already released for these operating systems at the time of release to manufacturing (RTM). We will offer additional microcode updates from Intel through this article for these operating systems as they become available to Microsoft. Use the registry settings as described in the Windows client and Windows Server KB articles. (By default, these registry settings are enabled for Windows client OS editions and Windows Server OS editions.)

Consult with your device manufacturer and Intel through their websites regarding their microcode recommendation for your device before you apply this update to your device.

Intel has worked with operating system vendors, equipment manufacturers, and other ecosystem partners to develop platform firmware and software updates that can help protect systems from these methods. This includes the release of updated Intel microprocessor microcode to our customers and partners.

End users and systems administrators should check with their system manufacturers and system software vendors and apply any available updates as soon as practical.

In addition, for Intel® SGX, Intel will perform a TCB Recovery operation to enable parties utilizing SGX to determine whether the microcode version related to this Intel Security Advisory has been applied on the platform the SGX attestation request originated from. Intel plans to update the Intel SGX Attestation Service (IAS) Dev environment on June 14th, 2019 and the IAS Production environment on July 12th, 2019, to return “GROUP_OUT_OF_DATE” response for affected platforms without the BIOS applied microcode update, and “CONFIGURATION_NEEDED” response for affected platforms that applied the microcode update through BIOS but with Intel® Hyper-Threading technology enabled.

As for end users instructed to check with system manufacturers, well I build all my own systems and I sure don't have any instructions. So who am I supposed to check with? Intel is the hardware maker with the problem so this announcement has me running around in circles back to Intel. :( The most recent update from Gigabyte (my board maker) is from March 2018. Won't Windows Update push this out? Do we need to install this stand-alone update? Too many unanswered questions.

That KB says to go to the Microsoft Update Catalog. Okay, I have 64-bit W10 so I am going to assume I need the 2019-08 Update for Windows 10 Version 1903 for x64-based Systems (KB44971654), dated just 2 days ago. That's a bit new for me to trust just yet.

Also when I click on that download, the overview says it is for the AMD64 architecture. I know that Intel licenses AMD64 code, but not sure most users do and if they have an Intel CPU, they might get even more confused.

I am confused so I can only imagine what my friends, family and clients who look to me for guidance must feel.

I downloaded that update from the catalog, but I have not installed it. I think I will wait for the dust to settle.
