Need help with Windows Updates for my Dell Inspiron 3647 running Windows 8.1. Most recent updates that “succeeded” are the 2022-01 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB5009624) and the 2022-01 Security & Quality Rollup for .NET Framework 3.5, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.7.1, 4.7.2, 4.8 for Windows 8.1 for x64 (KB5009721). Updates that “failed” are the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - v5.97 (KB890830) and the Security Intelligence Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus - KB2267602 (Version 1.357.221.0) both with Error 8007005. Many thanks.

Could someone let me know what N/A means next to my initial post. If it's Not Applicable, why is that? Many thanks.

Ran SFC Scan with ensuing result:
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

Ran SFCFix with ensuing result:
100%. Error: 0x800f0906.
The source file could not be downloaded. Use the 'source' option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see Configure a Windows Repair Source.
The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

The cmd window is still open with blinking cursor but not sure what to do next.

Copy the file C:\Windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log to your desktop.
Zip the copied file and attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

If the file SFCFix.txt is on your desktop attach that file also.

146 issues are already fixed.
Reboot the machine.
Run the command sfc /scannow again in a elevated commandprompt.
On completion, copy the file C:\Windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log to your desktop.
Zip the copied file and attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

Rebooted PC. Ran SFC Scan with ensuing result:
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Details are included in the CBS log.

Great, no issues found.
Try to install KB890830 only and report the result.

Here's the result:

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - v5.98 (KB890830)
Installation date: ‎2/‎20/‎2022 4:53 PM
Installation status: Failed

Update type: Important

Copy the file C:\Windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log to your desktop.

P.S. Each time, I am only zipping the CBS.log file not the entire CBS folder which contains multiple CbsPersist logs.

FRST Scan:
  1. Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
64-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.

  2. Right-click to run the tool as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  3. Note: Ensure that the Addition.txt check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.
  4. Press the Scan button.
  5. Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
  6. Post the logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt as attachment in your next reply.

A program called Pictus is installed. What is that ?
What was changed at this restorepoint log: 07-02-2022 13:17:54 Before Permission Change ?

Step 1:
The program "Customer Experience Improvement Program" reports an error. This program is not needed and can be disabled.
Click on Start and select Run.
Typ CEIP in the inputbox and click OK.
A window appears Customer Experience Improvement Program.
Select No, I don't want to participate in the program..
Click Save changes.

Step 2:
Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.
  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  7. Attach the logfile Fixlog.txt to your next reply.

Pictus is an Image Viewer program so I can view certain thumbnails (i.e. psd files) in Explorer.

Nothing changed after I created that restore point. I was going to try and fix the Windows 8.1 Update issue but couldn’t rename the Catroot2 folder. Access to the folder was denied and I couldn’t figure out how to make the permission change from System Owner to TrustedInstaller.

Windows could not find CEIP and I have no idea what it is. With Google search, there’s a Customer Experience Improvement Program with VMware but I don’t recognize this name.

Attached is Fixlog.txt file
