Is there a way to replace the Windows 8 Metro interface with something ... anything?

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad tablet with Windows 8 with the Metro interface. (Attached.) I found a shell online which is an improvement. But I would like to completely eliminate all remnants of the Metro interface and be able to use the tablet like Windows 7 or 10. I spent a day trying to downgrade it to Windows 7 unsuccessfully. I spent a day trying to upgrade it to Windows 10 unsuccessfully. I spent a day trying to install a Linux distro unsuccessfully. The problem is that it will not boot from a USB flash drive and there is no other way--that I am aware of--to install the OS. Yes, I plugged a USB hub into the one USB port and connected both the flash drive and a physical keyboard to enter keyboard commands when I booted the tablet.

Is Open-Shell, which replaced Classic Shell the best I can do?

As with any software, please have a valid backup in case something goes wrong or the very least create a restore point.
