So I got this laptop in about...2009? early 2010? First time it bluescreened, it was during startup. I updated my BIOS and it was fine for a year. Two months ago, it bluescreened while I was doing something. I tried updating again. Last night, it bluescreened while I was using Blackboard, a website/program used by my university.
I"m not quite sure what to do...?
I'm about to graduate from college, and being an English major, graduating depends all on my english portfolio and my capstone paper. I can't have my computer crap out again!

Recommendations:

The first thing I notice that screams at me as a problem is you have both Norton and McAfee installed on your system. Both programs are known to cause crashes, and I would recommend removing both.

For security, I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials; it is more lightweight, and far less likely to cause conflicts on the system.

Also, please update your

To update drivers, make sure to download the drivers from the manufacturer and not using 3rd party programs. Your drivers should be found from your motherboard support site (ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, etc.) or your vendor support site (Dell, HP, Toshiba, Sony, etc.) first. If you have devices you bought yourself, the drivers for those devices need to be downloaded from the manufacturer support site for those devices. If you need help, let us know.

To remove drivers, do so by uninstalling the device or software associated with the driver. Devices can be uninstalled through device manager, and then the device itself should be physically removed from the system if possible.

3rd Party Drivers:
The following is for information purposes only. My recommendations were given above. The drivers that follow belong to software or devices that were not developed by Microsoft. Any drivers in red should be updated/replaced/removed. You can find links to the driver information and where to update the drivers in the section after the code box:

Yeah, both are on there, but norton is expired. McAfee was offered for free at my school; we cannot use the school's network without a valid antivirus installed that's recognized by campus. Considering I only have 12 days left to use McAfee....I don't know if I should still uninstall norton.

So I downloaded what you told me to, and the audio thing was set up....but what else do I do? how do I install the other things that don't have a setup option?

The driver files are unzipped to a default location: C:\dell\drivers\******* where ******* is the name of the driver you downloaded.

For installing the drivers manually, see You cannot install a device driver by using its installation program in Windows Vista and scroll down to
To locate the .inf file and manually install the driver
Even though the support article relates to Vista, the same steps apply for Windows 7.

And yes, you should absolutely remove Norton. You should also inform your school that if they are going to require an antivirus program of their choice be installed, they should make sure it is up to date since theirs is out of date and likely to cause problems on newer systems.

Okay, so far it says the wifi and audio are up-to-date when I tried to update them manually.

Good news about the wireless and audio drivers. See if Intel has a more up to date driver for the wireless; if not, yours is probably as up to date as possible and the problems stemmed from the Norton/McAfee conflict.
