Interesting site that I came across showing gas prices by state (average).

California leads the USA with an average cost of $3.50 per gallon.

South Carolina - the lowest in USA at $2.48 per gallon.

Quite a difference -- $1.02/gallon

I've always found it interesting that when living in Pennsylvania, I could cross a nearby bridge into New Jersey (15 miles) and save 30¢ - 40¢ per gallon. That could top out at $8 per tank fill-up savings.

I see times have not changed that much since I moved from PA back to NJ as current gas prices differ by 28¢ per gallon. PA being higher @ $2.90/gallon; NJ @ $2.62 (average prices respectively).

Even more interesting - NJ $2.62/gal prices are "full-serve" (self-service gas is illegal in NJ); the higher $2.90/gallon in PA is for self-service. PA gas stations charge an additional 50¢/gallon minimum for full service gas, like most states do.

The oil companies have been trying to change NJ law to allow self-service has claiming it would result in lower gas prices. Yeah.... right!

New Jersey and Oregon are the only two states in the USA where full service gas is mandatory (self-service - illegal).

I live in the Omaha metro area, less than a mile from the Missouri River. On the other side of the river is Council Bluffs, Iowa. Gas used to always be 10 - 15 cents cheaper in Iowa because of lower taxes. My F150 has a 35 gallon tank so it was actually worth it for me cross the river for gas. But recently Iowa raised their gas taxes 10 cents per gallon so it is no longer worth it.

(self-service gas is illegal in NJ)
 Wow! I find that most surprising. I cannot remember the last time I even saw a full service pump!

With all the oil and refineries in Pa, you would think lower transportation costs would result in lower fuel costs for Pa consumers. No doubt politics and greed by the gas companies work to keep prices high.

Still cheaper than most of the world (Especially India!)

Self Service petrol pumps? Never heard of that as well :|

Yep! It is the taxes that makes the difference between NJ & PA.

I think it's sad that elderly and handicapped drivers have to pay the $0.50++ extra per gallon for full serve in PA & elsewhere -- for those stations that still offer full serve as you mentioned.
