Hello!

I've been having issues with latency lately. This is my first time posting in this forum, so I apologize beforehand if I do anything wrong.
I started having this issue back in 2016, when I tried upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Even though I upgraded all the drivers accordingly, I couldn't get rid of the issue - so I downgraded back to Windows 7, and it was back to normal. Then, in 2017, I installed Windows 10 (while keeping my files, however), and it felt like the problem had been solved.
A couple weeks ago, though, I noticed the audio was back to stuttering while watching stuff on Netflix or listening to music, going so far as freezing songs on Spotify sometimes. It gets worse when I'm on Discord audio calls (audio call + watching a video, for example). I tried updating my internet, audio, utility drivers, namely anything available in the ASUS site to download, which didn't work; downgrading them, which made the problem worse which made me go back to the most updated ones; and, recently, changing settings of my video driver (NVidia > control panel > 3d settings > power management set to optimal), though it didn't change much as I don't usually play anything.

I'm pretty sure it must be something related to internet drivers... Below is a capture of Latency Mon that I ran for a couple seconds right after the trace was over and it looks... bad, haha. If I close my Torrent app (qBittorrent) and my browser (Chrome) the latency shown in LatencyMon gets a lot better. I've been thinking about getting a new LAN card (don't use wifi for desktop, only cable) to see if it solves the issue, but they're kinda expensive where I live and I read on forums about some people with this same issue did and the issue persisted.
I usually have open: Photoshop CC (which is kinda GPU/CPU-heavy, but I'm not sure if it does anything to latency), Spotify (which gets some audio stuttering, specially after I've had my computer on for a couple hours), Discord, Chrome with 3-5 tabs open, and OBS for screen recording, aside from other minor software (Bit defender, Corsair watercooler manager, gaming mouse manager, Realtek audio manager, that sort of thing).

I feel like if I make a fresh install of Windows 7 the issue go away, as it seems it's some sort of compatibility issue between the driver and W10, but I'd like to avoid it as some newer apps/software aren't compatible with Windows 7...

  • System Manufacturer? > Custom built by online service
  • Laptop or Desktop? > Desktop
  • Exact model number (if laptop, check label on bottom) > I don't think it applies
  • OS ? (Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista) > Windows 10
  • x86 (32bit) or x64 (64bit)? x64
  • Service pack? Not sure if it applies, but it's the Version 1809 (17763.379)
  • What was original installed OS on system? Windows 7 Basic
  • Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? Computer came with W7 Basic installed; I made a fresh install with a different version of W7 x64 (Ultimate), then upgraded it to W10 x64, but this caused a lot of latency problems that I could never solve. Then, 2 years ago, I reinstalled Windows 10 once again, but keeping my files.

Hi sweetjellyfish,

Could you create another trace please, I'm having trouble opening the trace file.

Hey, axe0!

Thank you for your reply.
I made another trace file now, while watching a video on Youtube. Aside from some audio stuttering, what usually happens is that the audio and video desynchronize (whether on Youtube, or watching videos on players like MPC).

new trace.etl: trace_sysnative.rar

Thank you!

I would like to have a look at the health of the drives.
Please go to Download and click the blue zip button which will download a portable version of CrystalDiskInfo. Extract the zip file and run diskinfo64.exe which will ask for administrator rights, please allow it.
CrystalDiskInfo uses 3 colors for indication

  • Blue = good
  • Yellow = warning
  • Red = bad

A little below the menu you'll see drives with each a circle with a color, if any of these is NOT blue please click it.
Before making a screenshot, please do the following
  • Go to function > Advanced feature > raw values, change it to 10 [DEC]
  • Make sure all attributes are clearly visible
Make a screenshot of CrystalDiskInfo and post this screenshot in your next post.

Could you uninstall the current chipset/sata drivers from Intel in device manager, reboot your pc and let Windows install drivers by checking Windows Updates for updates.

Hey, axe0!
Could you give me a quick how-to on how to uninstall the chipset/sata drivers? I went to the device manager, right clicked on the Chipset driver under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, and clicked on "uninstall device" (pictured below); then rebooted and made Windows Update search for updates, it did download and install a .NET Framework update, but I'm not sure if that was what you meant.

Thank you!

I was expecting Windows Update to find an update for the chipset drivers, but it might've very well been already reinstalled.

No worries, you did what I asked of you. :-)
