Hello forum members!

I'm Fireweed, and I'm very happy to have found this forum. I'm currently in my last year of IT sys admin school, and I work at a MSP company doing bench work and all sorts of random things that need to be done like project tasks and security audits. After I graduate I intend to take a post-diploma certificate in cybersecurity and one day get a job in CS or computer forensics.

My favorite part of bench work is getting in a computer with a BSoD and trying to sort out what is wrong. I want to get better at doing it too, because I find that at my company at least, some folks have a tendency to just say "screw it, wipe and reformat it" rather than find out what's causing the issue. I actually had a rather fun one that came back with the same BSoD a week after someone had reformatted it. After a lot of poking around and some dumb luck I discovered that the client had installed a second stick of RAM but it was a different size, brand AND speed than the first. Took it out and everything worked! I was quite proud that I'd figured that out because the machine would have just kept ending up on the bench. It's stuff like that that's quite satisfying with that type of work. The more I can learn about BSoD troubleshooting the more moments I can have like that.

Other than being into tech and tinkering, I suppose my other big interest is taking care of my 7 cockatiels. I breed them as well but not professionally. They are loud and crazy but still fill my hear with joy. 💛

If anyone else is experienced with bench work I'd love to hear your experiences and any advice you may have for a relative newbie.

Nice to meet you all!

Hey fireweed - welcome to Sysnative!

Are your cockatiels the ones in your profile banner? (You know - I actually think you're one of the first users I've seen who's added a profile banner since the feature was available).

If you're interested in BSODs, you're definitely on the right forum. Check out the BSOD academy if you're interested in learning more:

Hi Will, thank you for the welcome!

Yes, those are my "teenagers". They are my 4 little troublemakers. And I very much enjoy the profile banner option, more people should definetly use them. Adds a nice bit of personality to a profile.

I was reading into the academy last night, but I'm unsure if I'm going to start it right now. Between classes, work, and the MS cert I'm working on I feel like I barely have any free time! We'll see how it goes once I've gotten the cert. Or I may give up on the cert. Who knows.

Welcome to Sysnative. I hope one day you will have a go at the BSOD Academy.
:-)
Thanks for highlighting the banner profile and for telling us a bit about yourself, we love to hear about hobbies and interests.

and the MS cert I'm working on I feel like I barely have any free time

Which MS cert are you going for at the moment?

Completely fair on the free time - don't over-stretch yourself. We're always happy to see new members with an interest in BSODs!

I'm currently studying for MS-500. I've been working my way though the 365 and Azure certs. My classes don't focus on any MS cloud-based things to I'm trying to build up my knowledge in that area.

And thanks everyone!

There is absolutely no time limit on completion. You work at your own pace when you want to.

There is a lot of stuff in the BSOD Academy that you may just like to read through.

Thank you John.

So in your opinion do you think that something like 3 hours a week would be reasonable?

Yes, there is no time limits or obligations to complete x number of hours a week. We have several students who are on hiatus because of other commitments and that is perfectly acceptable.
