Hello forum members!
I'm Fireweed, and I'm very happy to have found this forum. I'm currently in my last year of IT sys admin school, and I work at a MSP company doing bench work and all sorts of random things that need to be done like project tasks and security audits. After I graduate I intend to take a post-diploma certificate in cybersecurity and one day get a job in CS or computer forensics.
My favorite part of bench work is getting in a computer with a BSoD and trying to sort out what is wrong. I want to get better at doing it too, because I find that at my company at least, some folks have a tendency to just say "screw it, wipe and reformat it" rather than find out what's causing the issue. I actually had a rather fun one that came back with the same BSoD a week after someone had reformatted it. After a lot of poking around and some dumb luck I discovered that the client had installed a second stick of RAM but it was a different size, brand AND speed than the first. Took it out and everything worked! I was quite proud that I'd figured that out because the machine would have just kept ending up on the bench. It's stuff like that that's quite satisfying with that type of work. The more I can learn about BSoD troubleshooting the more moments I can have like that.
Other than being into tech and tinkering, I suppose my other big interest is taking care of my 7 cockatiels. I breed them as well but not professionally. They are loud and crazy but still fill my hear with joy.
If anyone else is experienced with bench work I'd love to hear your experiences and any advice you may have for a relative newbie.
Nice to meet you all!
