Intel core I3 2120
6 gig ram

No video card installed

Unit fails on intel hd video driver update
gives frowny face video tdr failure
collects info sends report and should restart
goes to blank raster and have to hold power button to turn off

turn back on and is still at old ver of video driver

Tried driver from intel update utility and windows update download same failure

BIOS dates from 2011, please check for updates. Be very, very careful with BIOS updates, they can physically damage your motherboard with just one little mistake!

2 STOP 0x116 errors in WER section of MSINFO32 (I can't run dumps on this computer). Try this troubleshooting post: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/bs...-video-tdr-timeout-0x116-0x117.html#post29532

As mentioned previously, I can't run dump files here. Hopefully another will come along and run them. If not, I'll get to them this afternoon/evening (US Eastern time).

That is the most current bios available.
The video driver is the same for windows 7 and was being used prior to the win 8 upgrade
The troubleshooting guides are for video cards, do they apply to on-board video?
This is now working fine with the default driver so far

I had a similar problem with an older dell (inspiron 9150) worked fine with win 8 preview release but not final win 8
reverted to win 7 and it is solid

Makes no difference if it's onboard or discrete (add-on). The tests are the same, it's just that onboard cards don't have as many options/abilities as a discrete card.
Video drivers aren't the same between 7 and 8. 8 has extra features (and also does more within the BIOS).

If errors continue, try disabling onboard card and try a discrete card to see if it makes any difference.
You may be stuck w/7

Is this an upgrade install from an HP system that was placed onto a Dell system? If so, I'd also suggest a clean install to see if you carried over anything that wasn't compatible.

Carrona/Johnone -- Analysis output below:

HP meaning Windows 7 Home Premium X64 original Dell Install
Intel website shows the same driver for vista/win7/win8

So far it is working with the default older Intel driver
This is a media server and would require quite a bit of program reloading
so the answer may be let sleeping dogs lie

It seems windows 7 was happy with older hardware, I have some OLD stuff with it

Windows 8 has given me problems on units less a year old

Re: frowny face crash on intel video update Fixed

Stephen Thanks for the info, a bulk of the 3rd party drivers were the newest available. but the Colossus had newer drivers, after updating them and a reboot the Intel video driver updated without a problem That appears to be the fix Thanks John

That's great news, glad I could be of assistance. If the BSOD's do come back, just reply again. I'll be more than happy to help again. :)
