Step 5 Seriously? We’ve been doing work on this so I would guess at least 4 of the .CABs are redundant… Even compressed this batch is 45 MEGs. Do you actually need all of them? I’ll attach the orange ones, and add the others if you REALLY need them.

Find Silverlight on the list and remove it.

That was confusing... It said it was installing a Microsoft Office Update (which I almost stopped), but I let it finish. Then it said installation complete and didn't do anything. I searched for a new icon on the desktop—nothing... Nothing new in the START menu... So, I did a search for "clean" and the "Windows Install Clean Up" appeared. After that I could run it and did the Silverlight removal.

So, now I try to run the WU again?

Okay, the update started, created a restore point, and said that it has completed successfully. And it all happend in less than five minutes, rather than endlessly cycling for a ¼ hour or more before failing. Yay! Thank you.

Most people might mark that as fait accompli, except...

I am still bothered by the disappearing Security Update, since those have never worked consistently. After one preview (2019-03 Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems KB4489892) installed correctly after some previous repairs, the "monthly" for the same period (2019-03 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems KB4489878) vanished from my update list (Error details: Code 80242016), whereas it had always persisted before.

My history with failures keeps me concerned. Between April and July 2016, there were no security updates, and then suddenly 7 of them in July, 1 in August, 1 in September 2016, and then none again for nine months until there were 3 in MAY 2017, and none again until a single one on July 2017, and then nothing for another 17 months, until December 2018, and now this new one, on March 14, 2019.

So I'm thrilled that the Silverlight installed finally, but still flummoxed by all the missing security updates. I've been told that installing the latest most definitely does NOT include all the previous ones, and in fact they should all be installed, preferably in order... <sigh> Will I ever get this fixed?

The Service Stack Update (SSU) cleared out several missing security updates, and BELARC tells me that these are the remaining missing ones, but notice it is all focused of Microsoft Office, and doesn't contain KB4489878:

Hi!

The information you have been told is incorrect. Once you installed the latest Security update, you are up to date as it contains all the latest security patches, including the ones previously released.

Belarc advisor is not a good utility to monitor Windows Updates and I do not trust it as it has given me false(incorrect) results in the past. My recommendation would be to steer clear of it.

The disappearing updates are normal as this system was designed by Microsoft. They are replaced as soon as the new update is released.

Which updates do you currently have listed as needed to be installed?

None, well, except as I pointed out in another topic I created, the KB4493132, which I've "hidden". It is a re-issue of the old GWX nag-utility to upgrade to WIN-10, and apparently it can't be disabled by the adminstrator after it is installed. The reasoning behind it? Who knows...maybe they're going to roll out another "Free" Win-10... In my opinion it's nothing but Adware for MS

That is an optional update according to this: The new 'Get Windows 10' announcement arrives for Win7 in KB 4493132

As we generally advise against installing those, you are safe either way. Since there are no other issues, I will mark the thread as solved. If you have an issue in a few days when the April Quality Rollup is released, let me know.
