Favorite Bookmarks disappears

This morning I turned on my computer and found my bookmarks went missing. Microsoft tech forums only talks about this issue after updates and restore to previous version, but it's been a couple weeks since the last update and everything has been fine.

I took some advice and used import favorites which restored them from several months ago and the favorites folder in Windows Explorer has an older setup.

I'm using Edge Chromium on Windows 10 and could use some help figuring out what went wrong and if it's possible to restore Edge back to the day before. I don't use System restore, but I'm considering to set that up after this mess.

I should note another strange issue with youtube. The site acted like I erased all the cookies and history, but that all remained in Edge settings and all the sites I visited were gone. I actually had youtube on first with no issues this morning, but 3 hours later it was cleared.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't use System restore, but I'm considering to set that up after this mess.

A) System Protection (which includes the System Restore function) is notoriously unreliable. Never count on it. Always take full system image backups so that you have them if/when disaster strikes.

B) System restore would do nothing for you here anyway. System Restore is about, literally, the Windows operating system and specifically, the registry. When you use it it gives a specific message that user files will not be affected. Your favorites are stored in user data files. (User data files are a part of a full system image backup).

And if your answer to @xilolee's question is yes, then stop using it and don't use it again. No IT professional worth anything will support their use. At best, they're snake oil, and at worst, they can and do wreak havoc on occasion.

Why you should NOT use Registry Cleaners (on answers.microsoft.com)

Morning,

Thanks for both replies and yes I do use System Mechanic for anti-malware, but also clean and I actually use it a lot to defragment the system memory because I don't know how to stop that problem without SM. I have 30 GB that remains in use after closing edge and other programs.

This is a surprise that SM could have caused the bookmarks to go missing. I was hoping it was something about the new chromium because my searches showed there was a common issue with Chrome not bringing up bookmarks. Fortunate I didn't lose everything but a hundred bookmarks in the last few months.

There was nothing unusual the night before using the computer on the 17th, but perhaps a registry issue went wrong after shutdown. Is there a way to restore the rest of the bookmarks or should I assume their gone for good? If there is another way to fix my system memory problem then I can stop using SM for the maintenance. Thanks again

I'm not sure if it deletes automatically some files, I don't use it anymore.

I can find my bookmarks in:
  • C:\Users\MyUserName\Favorites (internet shortcuts, i.e. *.url - I can't remember if I created this or MSIE)
  • bookmark.htm (I exported my bookmarks and saved this file in another volume and folder)
  • if you're also using firefox: C:\Users\MyUserName\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\MyFFProfile\bookmarkbackups
But I think I can re-import them only with firefox.
You can try to search boomark.htm in your PC:
Code:
dir c:\bookmar*.ht* /a /b /s

This was for c:.
Repeat it for other volumes, if you think to have saved it in another volume.

Found it. Unfortunately it is dated Dec 18th so that and the backup file didn't have the original setup so it saved over them. I will export the html to another folder from now on just in case.
