Hi,

This PC has been acting strangely for some time now - I've run SFC, SFCFix but attached the necessary files.

DISM won't run.

Grateful for any help that can be given :)

Hi Tom,

I just want to check first - I'm running Windows 7 32 bit - do I need the 64bit SURT?

Thanks

MarkieVee

Hi MarkieVee,

I've sourced all but one of your files but the last one is going to take a little bit longer. For now, let's replace what we have:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, MarkieVee.zip, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

I'd also like a new CheckSUR log please - rerun the SURT and attach the same log.

Tom

Thanks, MarkieVee. As expected, we're left with one error:

Code:
(f) CSI Manifest Failed Catalog Check 0x00000000 winsxs\Manifests\x86_microsoft-windows-m..ditevtlog.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.23040_en-us_5c7200c9d1585271.manifest x86_microsoft-windows-m..ditevtlog.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.23040_en-us_5c7200c9d1585271

SFC returned an awful lot of errors too which we'll have to look into, but I want to get this manifest sorted before we go ahead with those.

How old is this computer? Due to the extent of the corruption, it may well be a sign of a hardware problem so it would be good to run a hard disk check:

  • JcJ91sx.png
GSmartControlFollow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:
    • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop
    • Extract the content of the GSmartControl .zip archive and execute gsmartcontrol.exe
    • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name)
    • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete)
    • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply
    • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, copy and paste their name in your next reply (or take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply);
      info_failing.png
Thanks to Aura for the instructions.

I'll get back to you when I have this mystery file.

Tom

Hi tom982,

It's a relatively old system, but reasonably well maintained. i.e patched, drivers updated, software updated.
I'll run through the disk check and let you know the result.

Regards

MarkieVee

Hi MarkieVee,

I'm currently discussing the GSmartControl results with someone else and will get back to you on that.

Another helper (BrianDrab) kindly provided me with a copy of the last remaining file so we can go ahead with that replacement.

looks like 'trusted installer' is doing something

Hi MarkieVee,

Great, that's all fixed now. Yeah they can be quite big (I've seen them over 3x yours) but fortunately they compress very well. Zip it up and try to attach it, if that doesn't work, do this instead:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. [sfcfixdownload]Download SFCFix[/sfcfixdownload] (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the attached file, SFCFixScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFixScript.txt - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Going back to GSmartControl, I discussed your results with another helper and he told me that this shows that the HDD is on it's way to failing. We can't say how long it will be until it fails (could be years or days) but it's important that you're aware of the risk - do you backup your files regularly? I highly recommend that you do, if you don't already. It isn't need in need of immediate replacement and, provided you backup regularly, the risk of data loss is low but it's important that you monitor the health of the disk (with GSmartControl) for signs of imminent failure - if you see the RAW_VALUE changing then start a thread in the hardware forum and someone will be able to assist (or just reply here, I don't mind). Alternatively, if you just want peace of mind then you should replace the disk.

Let me know your thoughts and we can move on from here.

Tom

Hi Tom,

Yeah I do backup regularly and I have a replacement drive ready to switch in :)

looks like the log files have been uploaded :D

Thanks

Thanks, MarkieVee. I'll get back to you on a fix when I have it - it might be later today, or in the next few days. There's 51 files to source and it can be a really slow process on my internet connection (dependent on the file size).

Hi tom982,

the fix completed successfully and I've run the script to upload the cbs.log

Hi MarkieVee,

All sorted! Your updates should work now so give it a go and let me know how you get on.
