Hello,

Win 10 LTSC 2021. 21H2 19044.4529.

I had the above update failing several times. Is the only update that fails. In same day when KB5040427 failed, another update installed correctly KB5041018.

Some months ago had an update that failed, KB5028997, I resolved that and that update installed in the end.

I used SFC /scannow followed by DISM restore health command.

Cryptographic service got some problems.

I also use this commands:

net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
net stop appidsvc
net stop cryptsvc

rmdir %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution /S /Q

When I first installed this LTSC windows. Checking dberr text look like this

Crypt right from the start.jpg

Installed win 10 LTSC twice, with same results. Installation was offline with just an new M2 drive connected.
After connected to the internet Jet errors disappeared but, some other errors came up.

I had win 10 LTSC 2019 before with dberr clean of errors but, this LTSC 2021 seems was troubled from the start.

However I will upload update log maybe that will help more.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank You

Hi,

Upload the setupapi.dev.log file
  • Open Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\Windows\INF folder.
  • Right-click on the file setupapi.dev.log and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Now the message will appear, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
  • Click on the Yes button here.

  • Attach the file setupapi.dev.zip in your next reply.

Sorry I don't have that file, maybe if I try to update windows again, will produce one.

Hello,
Tried to update again today, but failed, went to 7% installation after restart and restarted to roll back.
However now I have the setupapi file you requested.
In the file said something about Device Install Service not started. Checked services, Device Install Service was set on manual, I started the service myself and try to update again, update failed. I did upload a second setupapi.dev file after all that.

On the other hand Windows shows that update installed successfully, but is not the case.

Hi,

Please do the following to perform a filescan.

Download
6530fbb0f4101-56f31e53c97da-SFCFix.PNG
SFCFix and save it to your desktop.

Warning: This fix was written specifically for this system. Do not run this fix on another system.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it to your desktop.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.
650c22f99662d-6190d993a26f3-SFCFix-Zip-Eng.gif

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Afterwards reboot the system and attempt to update. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs and a copy of the Setupapi.dev.log.

Thank you, the update worked now.

What can I do with the Cryptographic Service, as I said at the start of the post is like that from the day of the OS install.

Thank You

Hi,

You're welcome. Glad to hear the issue has been resolved.

The logfile 'dberr.txt' will only log issues with the catalog database, but you have run "rmdir %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 /S /Q" as mentioned in your start post as well. So this command will reset the database as well. However, you can perform the following for an additional check.

Verify the catalog database by using Esentutl
  • Open the Start menu of Windows and type the command CMD
  • When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  • Copy and paste the following commands one at a time into the command prompt and press enter after each.
Code:
net stop cryptsvc
esentutl /g %systemroot%\System32\catroot2\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\catdb
net start cryptsvc
  • Take a screenshot of the command prompt window and paste it into your next reply.

Don't know if is a link between Cryptographic SVC and those NA Processes which appears every time I restart PC in explorer.exe handles.
I use Kill Switch by Comodo Security, a kind of a task manager. At first I thought was just a bug in Kill Switch showing those strange handles and that's why I checked with Process explorer by Sysinternals.

This strange handles multiplies if I put PC to sleep, each session adding more NA process. Please see the picture bellow.
The processes in my OS that got those handles are explore.exe, Nvidia Display Container.exe, also in atieclxx.exe but that only if I open Steam. atieclxx.exe from the GPU driver inside my 7600 Ryzen.

Secure Boot is on, Core Isolation is ON , Eset Internet Security.
On the old system I had same strange handles in explore.exe but, was no Secure Boot or Core Isolation. Eset is not the culprit either. I have no clue why I are those handles present and I'm not ruling out a security issue or a failed/successful injection of one of the application I'm running on my PC.

Was this an Windows 7 (Prof) installation upgraded to Windows 10?

Please do also the following.
  • Click the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  • When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  • When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter afterwards.
    Code:
    chkdsk
  • Wait for this to complete.

Download
6198cd309385f-58a60a47ed1bd-ListChkdskResult.PNG
ListChkdskResult.exe and save it on your desktop.
  • Rightclick ListChkdskResult.exe and select Run as administrator.
  • Notepad will open the file ListChkdskResult.txt on completion. (This logfile ListChkdskResult.txt is also saved on your desktop.)
  • Post the logfile ListChkdskResult.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Please run also the following tool.

Download the
577bf0efb8088-FRST.png
Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:

Download the 64 bit version: - Farbar Recovery Scan Tool Link
  • Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.
  • Right-click to run the tool as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Note: Ensure that the Addition.txt check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
  • Post the logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt as attachment in your next reply.

No, was a Clean Install of win 10 LTSC 2021, the M2 drive was new, no old HDD or SSD was connected to the PC while installing Windows.

ListChkdskResults shows the bellow findings, are false positives?

Yes, ListChkdskResults is not digitally signed so it could be flagged as potential thread. You can ignore this FP.
