Dear all,

I am a user of Windows 8 (not 8.1).
Today my desktop's Windows Explorer crashes every time I open Windows Photo Viewer.
So I run a "sfc /scannow" on the Command Prompt.
It says as follows

"Microsoft Windows [Version 6.2.9200]
...Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some
of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not
supported in offline servicing scenarios."

Then I went to C:\Windows\Logs, copied the "CBS" folder to the desktop, zipped it and upload it.
The zip file is 25mb, so I cannot attached it. Here's the SendSpace link of the file.
Download CBS.zip from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

Could someone please help me figure out the problem and solve it?
Thank you for your consideration.

Hello and welcome to Sysnative,

Please can you upload the file again - SendSpace is giving me an error:

The file has been deleted by the uploader and it cannot be restored. Please contact the sender and ask them to upload the file again.

Thanks,
Stephen

To be specific, the explorer crashes only i open windows photo viewer (a photo) on the desktop.
It seems to be okay if i open a photo from a folder.

Hi,

Can you run SFC once more for me please?

SFC Scan

  1. Press the Windows Key on your keyboard and X to open up the Power User Tasks Menu
  2. Click (or tap) Command Prompt (admin)
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue (approximately 15 minutes)

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post, or upload to SendSpace if it's too large.

Hi,

Something weird went on with the HTML in your last post.... Not sure what happened there...

Anyway, yes, the SFC scan returned clear. I'm going to need some more information:

- open Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

And one more piece of info, both incidents (including the first one i fixed, or so i think i fixed temporary) happened right after power cuts at my home.
The first time was an electrical accident which cut the power suddenly when my computer was on.
The second time was a routine inspection in my building, and my computer was off when the power went out.
I don't know if this is connected to the explorer crashes, it seems unlikely but too strange to be a coincidence.

Thank you.

Hi Stephen,

Looks like I found the cause of the problem.
Before the second incident (which sfc /scannow says no problem), I copied and installed hundreds of fonts from my old computer.
Then every time I open wordpad, it crashes.
But when I uninstalled those fonts, wordpad returned to normal, and the photo-viewer/explorer don't crashes anymore too.

I understand some fonts may cause problem to wordpad, but will it affect
photo viewer and explorer?
Anyway, thank you very much for your help.
