Hi @slombards1,

Welcome to Sysnative Forums!

If you haven't already, please review the posting instructions here, and attach the requested log files. Without log files, our helpers will not be able to assist, and this will slow down fixing your machine.

Hi,

Export CBS (Component Based Servicing) hive
  • Click on the Start button and type regedit
  • When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  • When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.
    Code:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing
  • Once selected, click File > Export....
  • Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*).

    622dbef75cd3a-Export-CBS-hive.png

  • Name this file ComponentBasedServicing (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click on the saved file and choose Send > Compressed (zipped) Folder.
  • Attach the .ZIP file to your next post.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

I am logged in as Domain Admin (who also has local admin rights on Server)

When I click on Component Based Servicing, then File, Export (as above).... I am unable to export .... " Cannot export c:\tmp\ComponentBasedServicing : Insufficient Privileges

I tried again after taking ownership of key & subkeys, with exactly the same results.

Suggestions ?

I am able to save as .reg file just not the hive dump above.

Retrieve SOFTWARE Hive
Note: The SOFTWARE hive has confidential and sensitive information in it so please send me a PM with a link to that particular hive so it's not in the public form.
  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named SOFTWARE.
  • Copy this file to your Desktop.
  • Now right click on the file on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file(s) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or WeTransfer and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

Thanks for sending the file, unfortunately the CBS key is severely damaged multpile subkeys are mising! So do you have recent backups of this server to export a copy of the SOFTWARE hive from?

Rich (BB code):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\TMP-Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\TMP-Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\ApplicabilityEvaluationCache
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\TMP-Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\DriverOperations
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\TMP-Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\TMP-Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\SessionsPending

Unfortunately not a viable one.
When I picked up the problem I did a restore of last full backup in Sandbox env, with the same results.

I believe this problem has been there for some time.

Is there any way to repair damaged/missing keys ?

Unfortunately there's no reliable way te repair a badly damaged CBS key without recent backups. And rebuilding the CBS key with keys from a similar server may result in a variateity of other issues.

So I would suggest to rebuid the server.

I have already tried suggested SFC scan .... DISM .... instructions, with no positive results. Thus ending up with your site. This is an on Prem exchange server, which hopefully we can decommission soon.
Thx for your assistance none the less.
